Im not having a go at teachers, come from a school background myself and attended parents evening and it was for 15 minute slots per child so It just went on and on all week.

The thing is Im not sure what seeing dds teacher for 5 minutes will accomplish. There isnt time to tell you anything!
I want to go and I want to know my dd is doing okay but I also know if there is a problem teacher will arrange a proper meeting etc.
Is it just to see their work? Couldnt they send the work home for the night with a form asking if you have any concerns and invite you to make an appointment if you have? Bet teachers would be happier.

It's probably to hand out the objectives or goals or whatever they call them. We get given pieces of paper that we have t osign.

What age is she?

HRHSaintMamazon · 21/10/2008 21:24

If all is going well then they just show you there work and say what a great child they are.
if there is a problem they say , this is the work that we have done this year but we have some concerns. can you come in mnday.

basicly its just so that the parents of children who are doing ok get to see their work.

It's menat to be a brief overview from the teacher and a chance to see their work. If you have concerns you can usually make a separate appointment to see the teacher at another time.I think 5 mins is fine for most parents.

SqueakyPop · 21/10/2008 21:27

5 minutes is plenty of time to tell you that all is well.

Ours is a short slot where the teacher presents the child's short-term goals (agreed with child beforehand) for the parent to sign up to. Also a chance to mention any issues, and arrange a further meeting if necessary. My DC's school has an open door policy, so teachers are always available anyway.

I can see why the teachers keep them short!

Secondary or primary?
How often are they done?
Wat other contact do you have on a week to week basis?

When I was a secondary school teacher it would have been impossible for me to see parents for longer than 5 minutes each, and there were a few parents I just couldn't fit in at all - for example, I used to teach three classes of Y7 - so 9 children in total. Impossible to fit in. If a child's appointment needed more than 5 mins hen I arranged for the parents to see me a school at another time.

At DD's parent's evening (primary) the children's books are in the corridor outside the classroom, with chairs there. You can stay and look at books before/after or take them home for the night. I have found 5 minutes ample - but then we have excllent contact on a day to day basis with her teachers, so parent's evening was really nothing new.

At DD1's school we get a brief slot with the teacher and then time to look at her work afterwards.

We got 10 minutes at ours but as a lady that can talk for england went before me i got rushed along a bit.

ChippyMinton · 21/10/2008 21:34

We don't see their work at parents evening. One afternoon in the summer term parents are invited into the classroom for the children to show you what they have done.

Its primary and the only parents evening they have.

Thanks everyone, I was genuinely wondering whether to go or not because I have recently had a lengthy chat with teacher about an issue so didnt want to make an appointment and teacher be a bit, oh what do you want now kind of thing
