especially the first four seem very difficult and dd wasn't even entirely sure what they meant, looks like that hadn't really been discussed in detail in class.

Bit ambitious no?

Mad - would not expect my child my child to be able to spell them. DS1 is in p4 in Scotland.

I had this kind of spelling with DD3 when she went into YR3. Honestly thought it was odd and at first thought that Teacher had sent the wrong spellings home. I really couldnt see the reason for sending home the spellings, in fact actually started up a thread about it. In the end decided that it was trying to get DC to use WOW words.

DD learnt them, with a bit of help!!!

She is now in YR4 and honestly some of the words that she now comes out with, turn mine and DHs head!

(the teacher that DD3 had in YR3 was the literacy co ordinator)

Think she did a fab job with DD3, almost wish my other 2 DDs had her at that age!

I really think they should explain the words before they have to learn how to spell them...

I would have expected them as spellings if they had been introduced to the shapes in other lessons, so that it all meshed together. If they haven't been given a good understanding of what the shapes actually are then it seems pointless.

Ds1 is in Y3. He would probably knowt he meaning of most of those words and certainly be able to read them. So I would not consider it unreasonable to find themm on a spelling list. But not all in one homework.

His current spellings are much easier than that. Which I'm not entirely happy with.

Yes, I understand what you are saying.

If DD3 asked what the word meant then we explained it to her, a good number went over her head.!

DD3 has made us laugh in the last few weeks -

she made a little sign "CAUTION WET FLOOR!"

today she told us "I am in a dilema" We asked what was her her "DILEMA" her reply was " I don't know whether to have beans on toast or cheese on toast!"

In a round a bout way, some DC pick up on some of the obscure words and bring it into the everyday language.

I don't think I have ever said a sentence that contained the word quadrilateral

dd is seven.

Spellings are a load of rubbish anyway. They should be looking at the meanings and origins of the words. They are all quite interesting words to investigate bit to have to learn as spellings is pretty pointless.

pinkbubbleGUM · 18/10/2008 23:36

I do hear where you are coming from! One of DDs spellings were ALBINO! Where would she use that!

At least with "QUADRILATERAL" you know she will use that in Maths!

emkana · 19/10/2008 21:18

But even in maths lessons how often do you actually have to write the word quadrilateral?
