Did they all do that? Or could they choose a subject? DS came home with a pie chart on favourite saints once - his choice of survey topic He said it was tricky because most children couldn't name any saints

Not sure if they all did that TBH...I only looked at DTD1's book (at parents evening)...looking at other childrens excercise books would have been worse than looking in their lunchbox .

DTD2 did "how many siblings have you got" but she is in a different class.

I think it's complaint worthy too. Has the potential to be downright cruel.

Having subtly asked more info from DTD1

Apparently each group had a different question to ask...But from a list provided from a teacher.

But even if it wasn't from a list surely the teacher should have coaxed them into chosing somethign more appropriate?

I know DTD1 only got 2 votes out of 30ish, but I know that she is an all round popular girl and plays a backseat role in all social groups rather than havinf best friends IYSWIM...so I can look at the output from that POV.

The "class brat" that got zero votes (OK I don't like her personally, although I know her and her family well and don't wish this on anyone), she isn't very easy to get on with and from what I can see a zero vote is a genuine reflection of her friendship circle; will have had a hugely negative impact on her self confidence (I know that she had a few days off school recently after "something happened to upset her", I wonder if it was this) and it would equally have knocked the confidence of her mother. I do feel for her and her family particularly

Seriously though, yes it's a stupid idea: reminds me of when I was at school and the language teachers used to go around the class asking "What does your father do?", "How many cars do your family have?" etc and used to make me feel somehow ashamed of my lovely blue collar, non-driving parents, amongst all the doctors and three cars etc.

Even if the children were choosing their own topics I would expect any haf decent teacher to move them away from that topic, and onto another.

Write a formal letter of complaint to the head and the board of governers. Said teacher is either too stupid to be employed or is an active bully.

Oh no, that's so upsetting. I don't have school age children but I would weep if I saw that..I can remember with horribly clarity what it felt like to 'know' you weren't one of the popular children, never mind see it displayed graphically and then DISCUSSED.

How could any adult, never mind an educational specialist, think this is appropriate?

This has really upset me on behalf of any child that wasn't top of that chart.

I thought it was children who was supposed to be cruel, not the teachers.

I would be so angry if Ds's class did this.
He would most certainly get 0 and he would be very very upset by that.
