I wondered if anyone could recommend a simple easy to use book which describes what everything means. My ds is in Year 4 and really really struggles with literacy and spelling, his vocabulary is great but just hates literacy. Trouble is its been a long time since I really took the time to break down the english language so Im a bit rusty on whats what myself and thought a book on the subject would be great for all of us. Any other recommendations on getting a very reluctant 8 year old boy to write much appreciated.

There was a brilliant little book free with the Saturday Guardian a few weeks ago. Maybe worth giving them a ring and seeing if there are any left anywhere.

Also, see what the school's got - it might be a good idea to have the same one at home that they've got at school.

The price quoted by Amazon on this is ridiculous, but you could try for it at local libraries etc
We have it and it really is excellent.

Go on Amazon and search for Usborne English grammar. You will get loads of options coming up - spelling and punctuation too. Usborne books are really child friendly and explain what he needs to know very clearly with lots of lively illustrations - nothing dry and dull!
