Reception children- how much do yours have in their packed lunch?

Dd had her first packed lunch and I was worried I had given her too much food but she ate everything in it
She had
2 sandwiches
Fromage frais
Cheese chunks
Cucumber sticks
Apple
Banana muffin

I wouldn't normally give her this much if she was at home for lunch but thought she might need some more energy at school!
Is this a reasonable amount to give reception children?

Sounds reasonable to me. If she eats it all it must be fine. Think you have to go by the individual child. HAve you read 'Bread and Jam for Frances' by Russell and Lilian Hoban? Describes the most gorgeous packed lunches ever and I had fantasies I would provide such feasts every day. But seem to be making a lot of cheese sandwiches instead.

My DS doesn't have time to eat much. He is a slow eater and wants to be out with his friends.

He has

Sandwich (made with just one slice of bread - tried 2 slices as one seemed a bit mean but it didn't get eaten)
cherry tomatoes
yoghurt (often uneaten)
half a bag of crisps
a mini muffin
carton of apple juice.

He also has half an apple at breaktime. Again, he could eat a whole one given time but he doesn't have time. Might have grapes instead.

Haylstones · 09/10/2008 16:52

Dd is quite a fast eater and said she had time to play afterwards so she must have crammed it in!
She also had an apple at break time so she seems to have eaten an extinary amount of food.
I haven't seen that book but I did buy Annabel Karmel#s lunch box book, which is close to useless imo.
The only thing I'm stuck for ideas on is the healthy pudding snack thing. I made some banana muffins last night but am not sure waht else to try. Maybe flapjacks but they are hit or miss when I make them

No idea what extinary means. I meant extraordinary!

This seems fairly average to me, ds1 would eat that in reception, and still nag for food on the way home - I'll add that he hasn't gained weight in a year so certainly not overeating!

I'm always amazed at people who say take a snakc along at pick up time due to low sugar levels
ds seems to eat more than he ever has at school
fruit snack in morning, dinner + pud at lunchtime, and then snakc in the afternoon

snackattack · 09/10/2008 17:01

My dd used to be such a rubbish eater but since starting reception she's eating loads! Today's pack lunch included:

1 x cheese sandwich
1 x Innocent Smoothie
Handful of green olives
a few sticks of cucumber
5 or 6 strawberries
1 x frube
1 x rice Krispie bar

Just checked and she's eaten the lot!

tarantula · 09/10/2008 17:01

Dd has a
sandwich or pasta,
toms or cucumber or carrots,
fresh or dried fruit,
yogurt or fromage frais or cheese,
fruit bar or some other treat,
juice or smoothie.

Loads more than shed have at home but seems to eat it all too. They need the energy as school is exhausting.

Reminds me must bake some flapjacks this w/e for my breakfast dd's lunchbox

Eniddo · 09/10/2008 17:02

mine have v little

peanut butter sandwich
wodge of cake (homemade natch )
fruit
water

SaintRiven · 09/10/2008 17:02

bowl of soup. generally she eats 4 teaspoons and leaves the rest.

Haylstones · 09/10/2008 17:03

Thanks
It just seemed (to me) a huge amount of food or a 4yo!
She's now asking for a cheese string like her friends

no to innocent smoothies (a rip off)
no to frubes (messy)
no to crisps (shite and take too long to eat for little energy return)
no to fruit juice (water better)

littlerach · 09/10/2008 17:28

Dd2 takes similar to enid's dd.

1 sandwich, usually ham.
Pot of grapes.
Frube.

Sometimes soem rasiins.
Sometimes fruit bar or crackers.

At home she'd eat much more.
She hasn't been enjoying lunchtime at school, as she's scared of the playground, so I presume this is why she isn't eating much.

snackattack · 09/10/2008 17:38

Ennido - no to peanut butter - not allowed at lots of schools!
Yes to wodge of cake though (me please)

izyboy · 09/10/2008 17:40

Hayls that's the amount I initially put in but the HEADTEACHER, no less, informed DS's classroom assistant that it was way too much. I dont think they have very long to eat unfortunately.

Haylstones · 09/10/2008 17:54

Am that the headteacher has time to inspect lunchboxes to examine the amount in them! Dd has eaten loads since coming home and finished her dinner so I don't thik she forced her lunch down!
Next packed lunch is next week so I think I might add some more fruit in case today really wasn't enough

izyboy · 09/10/2008 18:22

majeika · 09/10/2008 18:26
