I'd like to help out at dd's school... how to go about getting involved?

DD has just started reception.

I'd love to get involved with the school somehow but have no idea how to go about it.

Do I just volunteer my services to her teacher? Wait for a request for help?

No idea what I want to do tbh - I just have a bit of free time a couple of days a week and would be happy to listen to readers or whatever needs doing.

Yes, I am utterly clueless

Ask the teacher as your first point of contact. If she say 'oh yes thank you very much' and you never hear again, I would go and ask the head - they might have more idea of where you can help across the school, not just in DD's class.

You have to be CRB checked if you go into a school to work with the children so they may not take you on if they won't be needing anybody that often - it is a bit of a faff getting it done.

Or ask about the PTA or being a governor at the school office or with the head.

Oh yes I had forgotten about CRB checks I can see why they might only ask for volunteers when necessary if it's a pita then.

I'll speak to her teacher tomorrow then, thanks

No offer of help is turned down at my DS's school. Loads of parents come in to hear the children read, but they also help take the children out for walks, do gardening etc. Everyone is CRB checked but they don't make it seem like a hassle. I would speak to your DD's teacher, I'm sure she will be delighted that someone wants to get involved.
