dd needs to eat every 2 hours for medical reasons but is refusing food in school. She's in reception class.
The reception started lunch this week and go full time next week.
Dunno what to do?

Don't really believe this! Surely no school would be dumb arsed enough to refuse food on medical grounds.
You need to have a serious word with the head teacher. Is there a doctor who can back you up?

junebug, the school isn't refusing food. the DD is refusing to eat it.

I don't know either SR. does she understand that she will be ill if she doesn't eat?
it's very hard, even at that age being the one that is singled out for something.
is it all quite low-key? ie, can she have a couple of snacks on her table, or in a little bag or something so she can help herself?

its dd that is refusing to eat. Sorry, didn't make that clear.
She's always been funny about eating out of the house.

Can you go in to feed her for a week or so?

JuneBugJen · 07/10/2008 18:17

Oh sorry, you did make that clear!
Is it affecting her medically? Is she diabetic? What are her anxieties?

she is seriously underweight and chokes on food (she has CP). Dunno why she wont eat. Today she apparently spent the entire half hour staring at the other kids and wouldn't open her mouth.
(she has to be fed like a baby only the school park her in a chair rather than on lap for helath and safety. They wont budge for that one)
Just wondered if anyone else had 4 yo's who wouldn't eat and why? dd can't speak so she can't sy. Maybe other 4yo's could throw some light on it?

dd2 has learning disabilities and has also always been very underweight. Whenever she is a new or unusual situation, she hardly eats anything. She goes to a special school and in her new class again this year, she is not eating much lunch. The same thing happened last year and it gradually improved over the year, until near the end of last term she was eating masses.

Both my dds seem to express their worries through not eating. I hope your dd will gradually get used to her new eating surroundings and start eating soon. Does she have a TA with her all day?

My DS is similar, he finds the large group at lunchtime really distracting. He has a metabolic disorder which means he also has to eat every 2 hrs, communication problems and mild CP.

Is there something your DD particularly likes? My DS loves innocent smoothies, which is good as they are 20%carb (give or take) so a handy thing to like. I send him in with these for breaks.

Not sure what to suggest about the lunches though, he only goes in 2 a week and I pick him up straight after and give him more food then.

Can she take a familiar lunchbox in, as a visual clue/trigger to 'this is time to eat'? When DS was at SN nursery he would only have lunch if it was in a particular lunchbox

I hope you get better advice than I can offer.
