dd came home today with letter about dyslexia screening test that i didnt even know she'd had!

ds1 had the test couple of weeks ago so i thought theyd confused them until turned sheet over and its report on her-including background etc.shouldnt i have known they were doing it or even that they had concerns????shes not by the way it says 'little evidence of dyslexia' but i knew she was behind on her reading and bit behind on her writting but her readings really catching up.im not mad that they tested her or that they had concerns just that i wasnt told!!!maybe this should be in am i being unreasonable!

Think you should have been told of their concerns but good that they have tested. My cousin recently left school at 16 to go to a FE college. The first week there she was diagnosed as dyslexic!

They ought to have told you, yes.

But, I suppose you could look on the bright side - at least they are looking out for these things and testing for them etc.

really!?i am glad they tested,i just wish i knew they had worries!as i said ds1 just got diagnosed and ive heard so many stories like yours so i know were very lucky that its been found early-hes 7.

I think you have every right to the fuming. It is a blooming cheek to test a child for dyslexia without permission.

Whilst I'd want to know why I wasn't told, I'd rather they were looking than not. I couldn't imagine having a child go through all of primary and secondary and then find out they were dyslexic rather than thick as my (actually second) cousin was labelled.

I work at a junior school & all the year 3 & any other new children are routinely tested for dyslexia, it doesn't mean the school necessarily has concerns about them.

Perhaps they tested her because of your DS's diagnosis as a matter of policy (given there's a strong genetic link) and thought that that would have been mentioned to you when discussing your DS? Or, as Rusty says, it may be completely routine.

My DSs' infants screens everybody for dyslexia. It isn't the same as a full blown test. Don't they do something like stand on one leg with their eyes closed?

Anyway, it is just one of those things for them like being weighed or having the eye sight tested. Doesn't mean anything.

As the mother of two dyslexic boys, one of whom wasn't diagnosed until Y6, one of the things I beat myself up most about is wishing I had insisted on specific testing earlier.

All children get baseline assessments. They don't ask for parental permission. Most parents do not get offended.

RustyBear- that would make sense as she has just gone in year 3(it said it had been done last term,they didnt know about ds then).
am more chilled today.
i was only 'offended' as ds had not been picked up-they had labelled him as naughty with no concentration and distruptive.we got him tested.so found it odd that theyd tested the one who although a little bit behind was no where near having as much trouble as ds.if that makes sense.i am glad they tested and obviously glad that shes not dyslexic.
