Inappropriate reading book?

My ds came home with The Fire Eaters, by David Almond yesterday. Has anyone read it? He said it was really scary and he didn't like it, and when I flicked through I came across some pretty gruesome passages. I'm going to ask to change it today, but I'm a bit bothered that it was in the Year 3 library at all, to be honest. Is the teacher going to think I'm a loon if I say something about it?

I think from this information that it is probably aimed more at year 6s so I'd ask the teacher whether the library is for KS2 and whether there is anything that can be done to stop the younger Juniors accessing books that are simply covering too old material for them

(by the way I grew up with a David Almond ... his mum was called Hazel .. always made me laugh that )

Our junior school is very strict about what the different year groups were allowed to read. The only problem is that the fast and early maturing readers are left reading the same babyish material again and again.

Sounds like your school has gone a bit far in the other direction. Maybe a quiet word with the teacher.

Thanks all - it was the page of detailed description of someone sticking a skewer through his own face that put me off a bit!

He's changes it for Just William, and the other books gone to the Year 6 library.
