Year 4 teacher asked my opinion on trips today - was £12 a term too much to pay for 3 trips?

I thought not.

Was that £12 each or for 3 trips? That sounds very reasonable if that is the case. Our school relies heavily on coaches for big trips which always put the cost up. They are very good at walking to the local woods or churches etc for simpler outings. Do any or your primaries ever use public transport for trips?

MUM23ASD · 30/09/2008 10:36

no- sounds reasonable to me.

coppertop · 30/09/2008 10:39

Ours are usually around £7 or £8 each.

So if you mean £12 for all 3 trips combined then yes it's reasonable.

If you mean you have 3 trips that are £12 each then no it's not reasonable.

MUM23ASD · 30/09/2008 10:42

hi CT!!!

yes...i'm assuming £12 for all trips ...no £12 a trip

Charlee · 30/09/2008 10:43

SOunds really reasonable and alot cheaper than some schools i know of.

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:45

one is a victorian archive day so no travel (they are coming to us) £4.20

then a trip to somewhere on a coach £6

then a trip to salisbury for a victorian christmas (coach paid by governors) so only £2

good glad you think reasonable as I said I thought it was great but then panicked that I may live in middle class bubble

I'm assuming you mean one trip each term (so 3 in all) costing £12 each term/trip.

Whether this is reasonable, I think, depends on

your costs (our LEA coaches, for example, cost a fortune)
are the trips educational/curriculum-related or just a jolly?
the demographics of your school - if all parents are well-off and willing to pay then £12 for a good outing may be OK
do you allow parents to pay in instalments? do you offer a discount or waive charges for chidren on free school meals?

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 30/09/2008 10:50

Sorry. x-post. £12 for 3 trips seems extremely reasonable. If you had suggested £120 for 3 trips, that would have been bubble fantasy land!

roisin · 30/09/2008 16:22

Round here that would be considered a lot: not a lot for 3 trips, but a lot to fork out for just one term, especially if you have more than one child.

At my boys' primary I would generally expect to pay no more than £12 in total over the entire year for all extras - trips/activities etc. (When we get theatre groups in and so on the children are not charged.) On top of this are fees for residentials in yrs4-6.

But we live in an area of high deprivation so there are limits on what the school can expect.

For instance next week ds2 is going on a "trip" to the new Youth Gym at the Council Leisure Centre. It's about a mile and they are walking both ways. They have to pay £1 each for the trip.

£12 for 3 trips in one term I would think was entirely reasonable.

Flamesparrow · 30/09/2008 16:30

not at all unreasonable. wish DD was having 3 trips

roisin · 30/09/2008 16:59

Would you expect there to be another £12-worth of trips in Spring term and another £12-worth in the summer term? And a residential to pay for as well?

MUM23ASD · 30/09/2008 20:46

flames...hi!

i thought it great too that there were 3 trips!

Flamesparrow · 30/09/2008 20:53

Ooooooooh! Was only thinking about you the other day - how you doing?

MUM23ASD · 30/09/2008 20:59

surviving!!!

tomorrow i have to travel 35 miles to attend my Incapacity Benefit Examination...and i am in a right tizz over the mere fact that i will have to travel somewhere i have not been to before...oh the joys of OCD!!!

Kbear · 30/09/2008 21:01

Bargain - DD's last school trip to Hever Castle was £16!!!! Coach fares apparently.

pointydog · 30/09/2008 21:05

You might be living in a mc bubble . You are asking mn after all.

Depends on teh school. At mine, school trip expenditure per pupil is limited to £10 a year.

Flamesparrow · 30/09/2008 21:45

I suppose you turning up in a state will work in your favour!

smartiejake · 30/09/2008 22:15

Good Lord!Three trips for a total of £12! Our trips are always at least that much each!

verylapsedrunner · 01/10/2008 19:06

a bargain
