should say 'he gives dd3 a bath and reads to her'

misdee · 30/09/2008 10:12

we just do the set work and reading, thats it. then i send her off to play. some days she would just sit there for hours and do more work if i let her. she wanted to start french lessons but at £5 a lesson , icant afford it atm. which i feel bad about.

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:14

oh I was going to suggest french club

dd2 does it

I set dd2 tasks like: write a story about a rabbit and draw a picture

or spend 30 mins playing a maths game on the pc

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:17

dd2 isnt gifted or anything but she is a really hard worker and bright enough

misdee · 30/09/2008 10:17

if i could afford it i would, but on top of swimming for dd1. and rainbows and brownies for both of them its just not possible atm. after xmas we can look at it again for her, as several debts will be cleared by then.

OP posts:
misdee · 30/09/2008 10:17

i dont think dd2 is gifted, but has just really clicked with learning iyswim. and does also work hard.

OP posts:
PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:18

well tbh our one isn't great, its not like she is learning tons, but it's just another 'schooly' thing for her to do

rainbows must be good (ours is totally oversubscribed)

misdee · 30/09/2008 10:19

rainbows is fab! its also over subscribed and v v long waiting lists. dd3 name is already down and she wont start till 2010 lol.

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:20

oh I cant put dd3 down the other two would hate her for it

maybe I will though

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:21

do you have all those games for the pc?

Jump ahead year 1
penguines big maths adventure
Year 3 cluefinders

all good

(and of course barbie horse adventures )

misdee · 30/09/2008 10:25

no we dont. she likes some of things on mathsisfun.com (could be co.uk) and other normal 'girly' games. like barbie [yak!]

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 10:30

I hired all mine from the library

thye are good

quickdrawmcgraw · 30/09/2008 10:44

I think I'm in a similar position to you. ds(yr1 equivilent in Ireland) thinks the work is easy in class and I would like to go in to talk to teacher but am nervous with it being so early in the year.
Generally what I do it give him work to do while dd is doing her homework.
I have been giving him the maths and english workbooks from Tesco to work through. He whizzes through the English but not so quick with the maths.
He's reading Horrid Henry and Captain Underpants by himself in the evenings so when he gets 5 pages from a v.simple ORT in school that's when I wonder if he might be better off getting something a little harder to bring home from school. Not for any other reason other than not wanting him to think he's a brainiac and doesn't need to try, which he's bound to once he moves up the school.

We had this with DS who it turned out was being a pain in the neck and getting behind because he had decided it was easy grrrrrrrrr!

PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 11:39

misdee sounds like we have the same situation as far as kids and learning goes

at homework time

dd1 is like this
dd2 is like this

misdee · 30/09/2008 11:40

lol enid yup! sounds about right. dd1 huffs and puffs through homework and school generally. is there for the social side. (except today when she is on the sofa coughing away). dd2 loves the whole learning experience.

OP posts:
PoorOldEnid · 30/09/2008 11:51

lol at 'huffs and puffs'

dd1 strongly resembles perry the teenager at homework time

misdee · 30/09/2008 12:04

dd1 is def kevin the teenager. and dd2 sits ther going 'ican do it for you' errrr no dd2, you cant! and even if you actually can, i wont let you!

misdee · 30/09/2008 19:39

am def not pushy today. dd2 read her book to dd1. i have been lax, as have been in and out with dd1 at the gp's. dd2 fell asleep early, only just got her into her pj's. dd1 coughing kept dd2 awake a lot last night

OP posts:
PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:14

I was pushy last night

I made dd2 learn how to spell little and girl and birthday properly

am probalby going to mumsnet hell

muppetgirl · 01/10/2008 11:23

Have you asked the teacher how things are going with dd in class. Your dd seems to be telling you what she thinks but you are missing the other half of the picture by not having a chat with her teacher who may not see the problem your dd is describing.

I disagree with childen being given the next level's work to do as learning should not just focus on advancement but enrichment also. What can she do with the knowledge she has?

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:26

no the teacher doesnt mind about her spelling and doesnt see it as a problem

I dont think i am doing the 'next level' as spelling seems to be taught by osmosis at dds school

misdee · 01/10/2008 11:32

muppetgirl, have had brief chats with dd2 teacher who has described her as 'fab' and 'in the top lot' and is a 'pleasure to teach'. which is very positive.

dd2 hasnt settled into year 1 as easily as year R, but thats to be expected as the transistion between foundation to KS1 is a bit of a leap, as gone is al lthe playing and fun, to be replaced with 'real work'. although they still have fun.

i do worry a bit, mainly as the teacher doesnt 'know' the children as wasnt there last year, and doesnt know the full family background etc etc. even the etacher who comes in on two days a week whilst usual class teacher is in training sessions or whatever they do, is new to the school. fortunatly the TA is the same one dd1 had, so a familiar face.

i am going to leave it till half term, and see how dd2 settles in, and whats happening before i go in. i thin kthe whole class needs a period of settling in really.
