What is the best way to teach number bonds?

Dd is learning number bonds.

We have been asked to re-inforce this at home, so, what is the best/easiest way to teach number bonds? She is 5 yo and in Y1.

What worked with your dc? Or, for any teachers around, how do they teach number bonds in class?

TIA

I taught my DD by having 10 objects and I took a few away(for example 6) without her seeing and if she could work out how many I had taken by using the ones remaining(4) She won.

I also used to ask them this sort of question "what number goes with 7 to make 10?" whilst we were out and about.

The easiest way is with their fingers because they have 10 of those already

We also printed a sheet with all the number bonds on and just had it on display so she could read it whenever she wanted.

Mine just learnt them by rote.

We did 1+9 and 2+8 on night 1.

Then night 2 we did 3+7, 4&6 and 5+5.

Night 3 we did both the above

night 4 we did the "opposites - i.e. 6+4, 7+3....

It stuck like that.

I used finger puppets - cut the corners off envelopes & put the numbers & a face on each one & played pairing games with them

Great ideas, thanks

love the row row row your boat song!

Best idea I heard was clothes pegs on a coat hanger so you can start with 10 on one side with a marker in the middle and move them across one by one, helps fine motor skill as well, very clever whoever thought of it.

Ping pong.. assming she knows them but need to practice recall

you say ping; she replies pong
pong- replies ping
ping ping- replies pong pong
you say 4 she says 6
pong pong she says ping ping
etc etc- needs to be played various fast!

Play pairs with little number cards 0-10. Turn over tow cards, if they add to 10 it's a pair

Plonker · 21/10/2008 21:34

It worked fabulously - thank you!! I couldn't believe how quickly it worked ...now you have to make me a song for number bonds to 20

Make a set of "snap" cards where you snap on the number bonds.

Curious about the song though

can you post song again please? message was withdrawn...

Ihadtonamechange · 24/10/2008 18:56

By popular demand...

to the tune of Row Row Row your boat

9 and 1 are number bonds
8 and 2 are friends
7 and 2
6 and 4
5 and 5 are twins.

Ihadtonamechange · 24/10/2008 18:57

Of course, that should be 7 and 3

Ihadtonamechange · 24/10/2008 18:58

Ruby, I've not got one for 20, we'll have to work on that.

wheresthehamster · 24/10/2008 20:06

Thanks. I wanted to try it with my special group yesterday and had totally forgotten the first line!

10 beads/pasta tubes on a necklace of string seems to have worked well, helps them to identify the pattern for themselves.

Like the song, great idea!

christywhisty · 31/10/2008 13:32

What about an old fashioned abacus, you could make patterns out of the number bonds.
