Thanks for all comments/thoughts. Not at private/prep.

Hulababy - re your child's 'one night of make up 10 sums with answer 10'. One homework this week, as well as the reading, sight words, tables (ie story of a number), spellings to copy plus write sentences for was also, from memory as it has been handed in, five lots of making up 4 or 5 sums to make the given numbers.

My DD is just the same age.

1)recognise 12 words by sight - this would take her a minute

2)say tables eg 7-0 to 7-7 - she is not doing times tables yet

3)learn three spellings and write out x3 then write 3 sentences with same. -she is good at spelling and could probably write a sentence a minute

4)read pages 1-10 of ORT Stage 8(Magpies) - this would take 5-10 minutes as she likes to look at the pictures and take her time

5)copy 8 sentences correcting with Question
or exclamation mark (each sentence about 7
to 10 words in length) - this would take a while and she would be getting fed up by now - what is the point?

Generally, we just review her spelling (8-10 words she finds fairly easy) and she spells them out loud OR writes them down and then she reads her book to me. On weekends, she might get a literacy sheet and a numeracy sheet to do as well.

DD1 has just had this week's homework for year 1.

She is to produce a poster, using whatever method she likes, on the theme of healthy living.

Also 10-15 minutes reading per night.

This is the way I like homework to be!

pudding25 - my DD is at private prep, and quite an academic one too, but def not pushed in preprep - see homework I posted.butterflymum - yes, def too much for one night. Now DD is in Y2 they don't read reading books every night, just once a week. rest of time they can read their own books and magazines of choice.
