How to support a child with learning to spell

DS (Yr1) got his 1st homework today He has to learn some spellings by Friday.

I vaugely remember having a list, covering it up, writing it down then checking for accuracy. I also remember an exercise book were you could cover the spelling up and write it 5 times.

Is this still how it is done or is there a better way now? (It's 30 years since I did this at school)

I write each word on a postcard and stick it up in the kitchen opposite dd's seat. That way she gets to see the CORRECT spellings whenever she looks up. I never ask her to spell a word without looking at it, as I am firmly of the opinion that it is better to get it right. When the spelling test comes at school, I'm not really bothered if she gets them wrong - it just means she needs to see them a bit longer.
