So as I was traisping 'round Asda this morning I made a mental list of possible snacks and came up with this: banana, flapjack, wee salad of cheese/toms/cucumber, half a sandwich, slice of banana loaf (have never made a banana loaf in ma puff but am prepared to give it a go ) and maybe a packet of crisps rarely sometimes.

No lunches here (Glasgow) until after Sep weekend but I think I'm gonna go school dinners to save hassle.

Tassisss...I frequently refer to a 'playpiece' but dd1 just looks at me like .

Strike looks definite I'm afraid (DH is a teacher so back last week). I'm giving them flapjacks for their morning break, if I get round to making them tonight!

Girls will have rolls with leftover chicken, yogurt, fruit and juice in their packed lunches.

We have free lunches last year for P1-3 but it was only a pilot scheme and surprise, surprise not continuing this year.

Flier - thanks for that. Think that means dc's nursery will be closed...and possibly my school. Will hear more at school tomorrow, thanks for the link.

It seemed so important - that first school packed lunch when ds started in reception last year. I asked what he would like and got all his favourites and lovingly packed it all up - maybe with a slight tear in my eye.

It slowly dawned on me that evening as I interrogated lovingly questioned ds about his first full day that my wonderful 1st school packed lunch wasn't what he had had. There was another boy in his class with identical lunch bag with one letter different in his 1st name - what's the chances!!!!!! They'd ended up with each other's - and he didn't think much of my much thought out and lovingly packed food either!!

I give unsalted popcorn and a piece of fruit for a snack. I won't give crisps so popcorn is a popular alternative with my kids.

hannahsaunt · 18/08/2008 09:36

Ds2 was given his free fruit at the end of the school day so can't be relied on to be used as playpiece. I just fill his lunchbox with stuff and he can pick what he likes to be his snack (usually a cereal bar). Important not to give them too much for snack and nothing fiddly - there's playing to be done

clayre · 18/08/2008 09:39

we were told to just give them one item for playpeice cos they will spend the whole time eating and have no time to play.

Only 24 hours to go and my pfb will be in her P1 class, sniff sniff

tassisssss · 18/08/2008 11:59

hannahsaunt at ds's school the lunchboxes get taken off on trolleys so I'm thinking the "play piece" needs to be separate. c'mon ja9, could do with your expertise here! and let me know update on strike please. good friend who's headteacher locally said on Sat they'd been told to shut but reckoned these things often change at the 11th hour...

clayre · 18/08/2008 12:11

found all the stuff for starting school, dd will get her fruit at 2.15 3 days a week

hannahsaunt · 18/08/2008 14:33

The site manager for our building works has cheerily said that they've been told in Angus to expect schools to be shut from Wednesday for the rest of the week

clayre · 18/08/2008 15:55

ds due to start nursery on thursday, the schools better be close
d for just one day

prettybird · 18/08/2008 16:11

Ds used to get a wee box of raisins - but never ate it, so we stopped bothering. In fact, he used to collect a new box from his school lunch and has now been banned from bringing home any more as we now have so many at home!

I'm sure the P1s get some fruit (we're in Glasgow) - found this, so it would suggest that all the kids get access to fruit. Not sure when in the day though.

ja9 · 18/08/2008 17:51

tassisssss, you are quite right, playpiece needs to be seperate and he will put it in his tray when he arrives at school. at meeting this av HT said school will open but will be some disruption - you will get letter tomorrow.

ja9 · 18/08/2008 17:53

separate

tassisssss · 18/08/2008 20:34

Thanks ja9, but need ideas! liking hannahsaunts suggestion of cereal bars and will do that next week. Thinking an apple'll take him far too long to eat. What else is there??!

(not that i'm making a big deal of this at all you understand!)

ja9 · 18/08/2008 22:11

oh snack ideas!!! you bunch of saddos

small (Disney pack?) apples
banana
wee bag of grapes / berries / carrot sticks
wee bags of biscuits eg cheddars
bags of fruit flakes (yoghurt covered yum yum)
rice cakes
cereal bars
crisps
tubey yoghurts
cheese strings / babybel etc
crackers
biscuits
love idea of wee bags of popcorn (but your ds doesn't like it... or at least he doesn't like the stuff i make )

Weegiemum · 19/08/2008 00:33

We have a deal with our kids that they have a healthy snack Mon-THurs (apple/banana/grapes/raisins/carrot sticks) and then on Friday they can have crisps or biscuits.

Works well for us. Friday treat is a nice thing!

I tried that apple thing today with the apple corer and foil and dd says the apple wasnt too brown and she ate it all up so I might try it again.

LittlePushka · 27/08/2008 21:16

Am I the only parent in the world who does not feed snacks? Why do kids need food between meals?

goldndiamonds · 02/09/2008 11:31

Having been through this last year, this is what I think: 1) snack - put in a cereal bar (or flapjack slice you've made at home) pre-open the wrapping so the wee one doesn't struggle with it - this is suitable because it's compact, nutritious and easy to eat without scattering everywhere; 2) lunch: sandwich, a few cherry tomatoes/cucumber slices/carrot sticks and a piece of fresh fruit + maybe a small box of raisins. It's important to remember that the children often don't have the time or inclination to eat too much food, so keep it simple! Don't put in crisps and biscuits because these will be eaten (possibly by another child... ) and the nutritious stuff won't! In my opinion, it's best to save the crisps/biscuits/sweets for outside school hours.

skewputt · 02/09/2008 12:04

My ds just had his first full day yesterday and came home with his lunch half uneaten as he "didn't have time" to eat it! I was a bit appalled, he's not a particularly slow eater. I wonder if he would have been rushing to go out and play, or if he really doesn't have enough time to eat it??

He gets fruit or a cereal bar for "playpiece", and a sandwich, tub of chopped up fruit and a yoghurt for lunch.

The Government have a scheme where all Key stage one children in England are given a free piece of fruit or veg as their morning snack & also morning milk is free up until their 5th Birthday
