I have a 7 yo Horrid Henry addict. What other books might he enjoy?

DS1 devours Horrid Henry books, but won't entertain any other chapter books. He enjoys simple informations books and will read any number of picture books, but won't consider anything else of a similar difficulty level to HH. Any ideas?

ImnotOK · 11/08/2008 20:18

Georges marvellous medicine ?

littlerach · 11/08/2008 20:19

The author of the No1 detective agencies has also written children's books which are supposed ot be quite good.

But I can't remember the author's name

Our daughter reads anything - especially enjoying Roald Dahl these days, may be worth a try. my nephew really liked the worst football team in the world (he is 7) which is Horrid Henry standard and pretty good. good luck!

Blandmum · 11/08/2008 22:15

Not funny, but I bet he'd like Beast Quest.

It has evven got my ds 'reading ahead' of me, whichjh is a minor miracle

Have you tried the Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton? though they might be abit young for him.. also the giggler treatment which me and my (just) 6yo both found v funny.

We have also recently read the stone goblins which was quite good too

rosealbie · 11/08/2008 22:17

I'd agree with Roald Dahl books, my 7 year old loves them.

He also loves the Dirty Bertie books (sorry can't remember author). Very similar to Horrid Henry in length and difficulty.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/08/2008 22:21

captain underpants?

barnsleybelle · 11/08/2008 22:22

My 6yr old ds loves the Alex Cliff super powers series. It's about 2 young boys who have to overcome a different challenge each book to help free a super hero trapped in a wall!!!

It's a fantastic series....

Jeremy Strong writes some funny stories - My Brother's Famous Bottom was the first one DS1 read but has read most of the others since as he loved it.

Agree with Roahl Dahl and Famous Five too.

I have found that if I read a bit of a book DS1 is reluctant to read, as his bedtime story, it can often get him interested enough to carry on reading it himself. Might help your DS's reluctance to read other chapter books too.

The Giggler Treatement is excellent! can't recommend it highly enough (especially that chapter when the baby gives her side of events)

Seriously if you like the giggler treatment I would recommend the Mr Gum books as well.. my dd has loved them. similar vein but with a bad man instead of dog poo lol

We atsrted with "you're a bad man mister gum" and have just finished "mr gum and the goblins"

MascaraOHara · 11/08/2008 22:32

My brothers famous bottom sounds good... I'm going to lurk for some more ideas lol

DD is 8, and at the moment is reading a set of books called Dear max, there are 2 more books in the series.

There are no chapters.

A little boy called Max writes to his favourite author, inturn they write back and so on.
Each page more or less is a letter to each other and there are plenty of pictures, some pages are made to look like postcards.

She is really enjoying this book, I got it from the book people, the whole set I think was £4.99

MascaraOHara · 11/08/2008 22:35

lol, I feel like we've just started a secret club Orinoco

The Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III series by Cressida Cowell. They are fantastic, proper chapter books but with great pix and info panels. Hiccup is the son of the chief of a Viking Tribe (the Hairy Hooligans), his arch rivals are Snotface Snotlout and his henchman Dogsbreath Duhbrain. Hiccup's bf is Fishlegs. They are both misfits for Vikings, not being huge, strong and very stupid, but smallish, weakish and intelligent (and Fishlegs is asthmatic and wears glasses and is allergic to reptiles - a problem when you have to have a dragon, which apparently you do). They are great books. I'm sure your ds will love them.

Titles are (as far as I can remember) How to Train Your Dragon, How to be a Pirate, How to Speak Dragonese, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, How to Twist a Dragon's Tail.

Dd (8) has also suggested Asterix and Tin Tin.

pinkbubble · 11/08/2008 22:37

Another book DD likes is the Dirty Bertie books. Dirty Berties Underpants
Dirty Berties Fleas

whatdayisit · 12/08/2008 11:07

Thank you for all of those - lots to look for next time we're in the library.

same here. DS loves the captain underpants books too

cornsilk · 12/08/2008 11:19

Captain Underpants again here.

titchy · 12/08/2008 11:21

Astrosaurus and Jack Stalwart series also good for boys this age.

MascaraOHara · 12/08/2008 18:00

We bought "too Ghoul for school. Terror in cubicle four" today.. will let you know how we get on and whether it's worth a read

flack · 12/08/2008 20:17

Boys Rule series, although it's actually easier reading level.
Astrosaurs!!!

whatdayisit · 12/08/2008 21:51

Oh thank you again. Lots of votes for Astrosaurs, but DS1 hates them. No idea why.

He loves the sound of Captain Underpants so we will definitely try him, as well as your other suggestions. Thank you.
