Schools in Salisbury

Does anyone have any experience of primary schools in Salisbury, or the villages around it? We are considering a move out of London, mainly due to school issues, and we have lots of family in Salisbury but have no idea with regards to schools and whether I am better staying put where we are.

Have had a brief look on Ofsted but would love to know whether anyone had any recommendations/tips.

I live a couple of miles west of Wilton and nearly all the schools in the surrounding villages have excellent OFSTED reports. Lived in Bishopdown Farm (area in Salisbury) prior to that and Greentrees was the nearest school which is supposed to be excellent. St Marks is also very popular.

As for Godolphins uniform, they took a vote a few years ago and the girls voted overwhelmingly in favour of keeping it!

The secondary schooling is not good-unless you like grammar schools and you think your DC will pass the 11+ and you live on the right side of the city.

Do they all sit the 11+ then? Have the first, middle and upper schools gone? I think I am out of touch-you used to have to be on the eastern side for grammar schools.

I still don't think it can be very good, for the majority, if the grammar schools have creamed off the academic best.

The middle school system has gone and anyone can sit the 11+ BUT the vast majority of places go to those who come from the private prep schools in Salisbury. I know of several girls who passed the 11+ but failed to secure a place at South Wilts due to excessive demand. St Edmunds has a good reputation for the girls so it's not all doom and gloom

Not great for boys though.

Although little goblin will be going to Bishops (here's hoping) and i still have 6 years to bribe/coerce my little angel into mummys way of thinking

I love living near Salisbury, it is very quiet though. Dh and I went out last night and had a meal in the new Thai restaurant and as we walked back to the car we noticed that half the pubs were shut. It was only 10.30!!!

Unfortuneately I didn't do any research about schools before we moved here so dd1 now has to wear a poncy uniform (only the hat though, nothing too outrageous!)

Elk · 24/07/2008 09:44

Oops, forgot to mention, the new primary school in ARchers GAte (just outside Amesbury) is supposed to be getting a good reputation. You are supposed to live in the ARchers Gate Housing development though (good if you like planes).

LOL @ Elk, the proximity to Boscombe Down would really put me off! Bad enough living here with the numerous helicopters etc!

PS. Where is the new Thai place? Went to Wagamamas last week, nice to have somewhere different to go.

Cod.... did you ds get in, or is he going to be sitting the 11+ this year?

I've heard that it is very hard to get in - unless you go down the private tutor/prep school route .
