Does anyone have any experience of Hill House International Junior school, London?

Posted this in Pre school accidentally but thought I might get more responses if i posted it as a Primary School topic. It's a huge school so there must be Mumsnetters who have experience of it; either having sent their kids there or having gone there themselves.

My dh went, but as it was 35 years ago it's probably not much help. His best friend is still the man he met on his first day there, who now lives 10 doors from us, and whose son is apparently going to marry my daughter (they're both 6) so it does seem to foster lifelong friendships.

peasoup · 16/07/2008 17:37

Oh, how lovely Prufrock! Was that in the days of whacking them on the bum with table tennis bats? (see my other Hill House thread-I learnt this from another Mumsnetter)

Hi Peasoup
My son was there until year four and we left because he was very unhappy there. We felt the school was going downhill - the teaching staff were grumpy and unapproachable - the kids were constanty being told off and not allowed to talk at lunchtime for example. The other downside was that there is no outside space (apart from Small school) and the kids have nowhere to run around and let off steam. I do still have friends with kids there and they are very happy so it depends on whether you think your child would fit in or not.

Lon123 · 23/09/2008 13:28

I have 3 children at Hill House.
My impressions: Children extremely happy. By London Prep School standards very unsnob. They don't create little lord Fontleroys. Very international. A caring holistic relaxed environment where manners still matter.
Top class teachers with a light touch.

They are not a pushy hot housing sausage factory. In the early years they let the children just have a great time. They start to rev them a little more from age 9 +.
Their Common entrance results ( boys public school exams at 13) are more than OK allowing the widest possible choice. They perhaps dont get quite so many scholarships as pushy pushy schools but they do compare very well with the schools that make a big song and dance about pushing children and then just dont get the results.

The kids uniform is practical. They dont demand blazers/ capes/ caps/ boaters/hats indoor outdoor clothes and shoes and sports kits. They just have a fairly basic summer and winter outfit. This inturn saves massively on uniform costs.

The school is somewhat eccentric and quirky.
It is pushed on space but their management of the space is extraordinary. Yes on observation there do seem to be Hill House crocodile marching everywhere but it is a HUGE school 1000+ kids with tons of classes- about 12-14 children per class. One of my children adores the fact that they are always on the move, zipping to the park or the pool and on occasion having French classes in the bus- chatting away in French about what they can observe.

It might not be ideal and it is somewhat wierd- but Hill House certainly make a plus out of the negative.

It also seems somewhat obscene to say that it is not as expensive as many very ordinaire prep schools. However it IS several thousands of pounds per annum less expensive- than those schools that have expensive additional assets to maintain- which does allow for a wider potential social grouping.

If parents want to be hugely involved in the PTA/ fundraising and organising socials then this is not the school for them.
I suspect that from your querying, tenacity and interest involved in this thread that Hill House is not the school for you as a parent. Hill House doesnt look for much parental involvement feedback or input or indeed give as much or very regular feedback about how your child is doing.

I have found an Obit- (link below) of the late headmaster which does give an idea of the place- the family continue to own and run the school.
Peasoup- I hope that this helps. It is clear from Hathead's comments that there are parents who havent been happy with the school. There are so many schools in the immediate postcodes all which are different and all of which have their promotors and detractors that this is going to be inevitable.
It all comes down to the child you have and their personality. Can your child's nursery help you out or provide you with pointers as to which school think will be best for you all?
The major minus for me is that of logistics. If you have a number of children the multi venue pick up and or drop off can be too much to cope with. They stagger the times to allow for this but the stress of trying to find a parking space near to the school, and to get out with a perhaps sleeping younger child to then have to wait in a long queue to one at a time pick up the child before dashing to the next place IS horrendous. Cadogan Gardens -school is the worst for this.
Parents have moved from the school because of this.

Hathead and lon123 Thank you for your responses! I just did a search and found this thread again but for some reason it wasn't showing up on "Threads I started" so I didn't see it till today. Apologies for the slow response-I appreciate your comments as I hadn't managed to find any current or recent parents from Hill House through Mumsnet so far, so I'm very happy to hear from you.
Hat How long ago did your son go there?
Lon- Glad to hear your DCs like it there. I am so keen on the international aspect of it and the Un snobbiness as I had an expat type upbringing so feel comfy with that and very UN comfy with the typical English prep schools. I'm not interested particularly in being involved with the school at all or do PTA or any of that type of stuff, so that doesn't bother me. I guess it might be frustrating to not get feedback about your kid though? Is that ever a problem? If there is a problem are the staff approachable? I have to say I am leaning very much towards putting his name down. Funnily enough he's starting in a local nursery in january, and I just spoke with the head mistress of the nursery yesterday, and it turns out she taught there for many years as did her deputy-total coincidence-I didn't know this when I choose the nursery. They spoke of it in glowing terms. Fingers crossed. I'll go for another look. I've seen Flood St., Milner and Hans, but not Cadogan yet. Are you American BTW? Just noticing your use of the word "wierd" .
I'm not so interested in the academic side of his schooling-I just want him to be a nice person!!!
If you have three kids at three different sites, do they not bus them around so you can pick them all up from one place? (Not that I need to concern myself with that, only having one DS, just wondering)

I have two children at Hill House with completely difference personalities. Both boys love the school. The teachers really understand the kids. The teachers will come to you if there is a problem. I find the teachers very approachable and always go to see them once a term. I am amazed at how each teacher gets to know the children so well and what they are good at and not so good at, You soon get used to the parking and what works. It really is a great school.

peasoup · 04/12/2008 22:27

Wow, have just checked back on this thread and found your response Kalg. Great to hear from you and with such positive experiences of the school. I had a bout three threads asking advice on it and have now heard from about three Hill House Mums all three very happy with the school. I think i'm going to go for it though he won't start for two years. Might see you then! Do your kids not object to being driven round so much; that was one of my concerns. And what's the balance internationally. Are you a Brit? I am, but had an expat upbringing.

Glad to find this thread, I have my 2 boys down for starting in Sept of this year. I love the fact that HH is an international school. I went to one myself a million years ago and it prepares you for anything. I honestly believe that the networking and social skills/connections are more important than academia. Having said this HH still does well and is a great feeder for Eton etc. :0

peasoup · 15/01/2009 20:11

Hello Mamatrio. Welcome to the thread! My DS should start there Sept 2010. I love the international aspect as I had similar a zillion years ago too and enjoyed it. Are you British? Did you just move to London? I'm a Brit, but really want him to have an international upbringing. Fingers crossed we've both made the right choice. I'll be so interested to hear what you think of it once they've started there.

Hi I am a Hill House mum. I have two boys there at moment, ages 9 and 11. They and their friends are very happy. The teachers have all been there a very long time which is a testament to the school. It is somewhat quirky and not very polished like some of its neighbours, but thisis half the attraction. The parents are also very relaxed. I have started a website which is a bit like mumsnet but is a closed forum for Hill House parents and teachers. So if you have any questions you want to ask existing parents, even some of the teachers you should log into my site, it is called www.cinochat.com, you will find it very helpful.

Lon123 · 13/09/2011 23:19

Hello Peas soup there?
Sorry I dont know how to bump or whatever one does.

Very interested to know how your children are enjoying HH and were the comments helpful?

Emma1979B · 22/09/2011 20:43

Hi... I'm so sorry to add negative points to the school but I changed my kids to another school in the area as they were not very happy at HH. I was probably very unlucky with the teachers my kids had, but they were not approachable at all. I thought that was probably something with the schools in the area, but, I realised this was not the case when I move to the new school. As there is no play areas, the kids were always organized to do games and therefore there was nor "free play". I also had concerns on the academic focus for good students. I agree it is very well organized and parents are very down to earth

sanam2010 · 06/10/2011 20:24

Emma, could you share which school you switched them to? My DD is signed up with Hill House but it's not my first choice, more my backup choice. What I like about Hill House is the potential for high quality music instruction later on but that wouldn't be enough to convince me if other aspects are not satisfactory.

cdd10 · 22/05/2012 21:47

I will echo others negative comments too. It seems to be a hit or miss with teachers, some of them can be nice others can be a complete nightmare. What has suprised us the most is the amount of private tutoring that takes place in the school. Even 7 or 8 years old kids have unecessary tutoring with teachers from their own class, which seems to be a huge conflict of interest. They do not encourgae kids expressing their opinions at all, in fact they seem to discourage that.

Very rarely they provide feedback, as far as I know only when serious problems exist. The parents are down to earth, very nice.

I have a child there, but I do not intend to enrol my 3-year old to the school. I heard that the school used to be much better a few years ago
