Foundation level results

Just got dd's report, and in it was a sheet of numbers - mostly 8s, one 9 for reading (or at least that's what I interpreted it as), and a 6 and a 7. What do they mean? No explanation was given! She is in reception, but an August baby, so is only little, and it would be useful to know what the numbers mean! Thanks!

If my memory serves me correct the average is 8s so sounds like she is doing absolutely fine especiallyy if she is not yet 5.

look at this appendix 1 of this document. This will tell you what it means in terms of what she can actually do. Think idea is that by 5 (so before your dd starts school next year) most children will be getting 8s for most things. A score of 9 means that she is progressing well beyond the stage in that area

I got DDs report and have no idea what the numbers mean.
But her teacher said she is lovely and very kind .and is helpful.And very good at role play and tidies up nicely.
But needs to try and stop talking when the teacher is

Last year in Y1, my fave comment for ds1 was 'his peers describe him as the kindest person in the class'.

This year his teacher said 'he is a curious child'. But I think she meant full of curiosity rather than strange.. but then you never know!

we don't get numbers, but it expressly says under each aspect whether above/below/par with expected level for year.
dd is above average but best of all is the huge report with photos and personal comments and anecdotes.

It did make me laugh - he is always saying 'am I odd?' and this will reinforce his opinion of himself. If I'm honest he is a little strange...

got DDs report today and it is rubbish. All we have is the e-profile saying she has achieved all her stepping stones, and one paragraph saying she has made a positive start in reception etc which could be about pretty much any child in the class. I mean how many children do not display 'good play skills' and are not 'friendly and good-natured'. I really feel the teacher could not be bothered to fill in the report at all. grrr.

Average score is 6 by the end of the Foundation Stage (reception) so your daughter is doing very well.

Children are expected to achieved the Stepping Stones by the end of nursery moving onto Early Learning Goals in reception. Children are assessed in 13 areas with 9 points in each area the first 3 points represent Stepping Stones the next 5 Early Learning Goals and the final point indicates at child consistently working above this.

mrz does this mean my DD has gone backwards then-because when she left nursery a year ago she had already achieved the grey box (which I think was ELG) for some areas such as communication? now really confused

It sounds more like the teacher is confusing Stepping Stones with Early Learning Goals in the report. The Stepping Stones are coloured yellow blue and green with Early Learning Goals grey as you say

thank you-perhaps I need a word with DD's invisible teacher who avoids parents at all costs!

we were given an explaination sheet with our reports.

1-3 are for those still working towards the early learning goals (so pre-school level really)

4-8 are those in reception and most children should reach at least level 6 by the end of reception.

9 indicates those that have completed the reception level work and is now working at a year one level.

Teacher gave us an explanation last night - levels 5-6 is 'average', 8 is above expectations, and 9 is only given for an exceptional child. That was dd's teacher's view on it, so am pleased!
