Year 2 SATs. Is level 3 equivalent to year 3 or year 4?

I thought year 3, a friend has said today that it is year 4. I'm confused, although I am also aware that it's not hugely important at 7 years old.

A level 3 at KS1 is, ime, very different (and easier) than a level 3 at ks2. The two don't seem to equate that well even though they are supposed to.

No it isn't, Hulababy - unless the school's assessment procedures are in really dire straits.

Teacher assessment at Y2 has to use the school's assessment system - so the procedures for teacher assessing in KS2 have to be exactly the same in KS1 and have to use the exact same assessment criteria.

Regular moderation meetings between staff should ensure that judgements are similar and that everyone is using the criteria in a similar way.

And Spottie999, r.e. "intensive summer of home schooling" - Hmm I wonder why your younger son's ability isn't shining through at school - perhaps he is tired after his rigorous summer of testing?

I would ask to see what he can do now in Y2 and what they think he needs to do next. Teacher assessment in Y2 (as in other year groups) is continuous, and I would expect his teacher to have a very clear idea of his attainment.

I agree with Feenie a level 3 should be a level 3 no matter which class/year group the child is in. My school like lots of others moderate work to ensure all staff have the same expectations.

Hulababy · 24/11/2010 17:03

I know it shouldn't be - however from what I read on MN and from what others say it would appear to me in many situations. How many times do we hear of childrn getting level 3s in KS1 STAS and than MNetters coming on here in Y3 when there children appear to be making no or limited progress,

DD's school doesn't use SATs or levels so a little meaningless for us in that sense. And I work at much lower levels with the children I work at.

Feenie · 24/11/2010 17:24

Yes, but the situation isn't helped by teachers/TAs trotting out the same tired old line of a level 3 being different in KS2!

Hulababy · 24/11/2010 17:42

True. But I am ony speaking on MN from a parent observer's POV. I don't deal with SATs at school in my professional role and would never commnt on them to parents.

Feenie · 24/11/2010 17:54

Since you frequently comment from a TA viewpoint, I don't think that was at all clear, Hulababy. It's absolute rubbish, and if any parent is ever told that by a y3 teacher, then they should say as much. It's an excuse, and it shouldn't be trotted out 6 years down the line of KS1 teacher assessment.

Hulababy · 24/11/2010 18:07

True. But there you go. Sometimes I have a mum head on. Not going to argue it though.

Feenie · 24/11/2010 18:19

And you did say 'ime' - which leaves your mum head out, since her school doesn't 'do' levels!

Hulababy · 24/11/2010 18:58

Look, I simply was talking of ime of MN. I have a splitting headache (cut my head open this afternoon, still urting bad) and really don't want to go looking for an arguement. OK - I am wrong. Fair enough. I take everything I say back. Level 3 should be the same regardless - my post did say that actually though, so don';t retract that. rest - garbage, ignore.

Oblomov · 24/11/2010 19:20

Went to year 2 parents evening last week. I had no idea what a level 3 was. they did say, this is national average, this is what we would like the children to achieve, this is level 3.
I was like, oh o.k. (load of bollocks, me thinks)

patienceplease · 24/11/2010 19:32

Feenie you are right that L3 should be the same in KS1 and KS2 BUT... we have the problem around here that because the infant schools are assessed on their KS1 results, there has been in the past a tendancy to over-inflate results. That leaves the junior school with a problem.
As a Y3 teacher we had kids coming in having got L3 at end Y2, and the work they were producing for us was nothing like what our L3 guidelines....
So yes - it should be the same, but unfortunately, it isn't always.

patienceplease · 24/11/2010 19:33

... and we tried to have meetings with both sets of staff to moderate but it always ended up being the same problem!

Feenie · 24/11/2010 19:58

Ahhh yes, I definitely see that it can still remain a problem in separate infant and junior schools - ideally as you say there should be moderation across feeder schools, but each school has its own results to protect.

Hulababy, bad day here also. Ignore me - that particular comment is a specific bugbear of mine, but I don't want to argue with you either. I hope your head feels better soon.
