Dd needs extra help with KS2 maths, but when I rang school to ask if they could recommend or even knew of any local maths tutors the woman I spoke to just said 'we don't advise on private tuiton. have a look in the local library'. I know people advertise in the library but I don't know anything about them, which is why I was asking the school .
How do you find reputable tuition?

Thing is school isn't the place to rate and review outside private tutors so don't be too cross with them.

As to where to find tutors, hmm library I guess so, but also other parents would be good or your local mumsnet maybe or (shhh net mums ) they are sometimes good with local listings. Tutors also advertise in local magazines/newsletters, we have a chid/parent centred one which has a couple.

try a thread in your local mumsnet area you might get lucky.

I can give you a name of someone in West London.

You could try Kumon. I suspect they have a website which will list local tutors or tell you how to find your local one.

I found someone recently by asking my friends. We're really happy with the chap who is now ds and dd's maths tutor. He is a friend of a friend and was just starting it up as a full business though he'd already been tutoring my friend's son for some months. I count myself very lucky to have found him (he lives about 1/2 mile away, too!) and the children are expertly taught by him in a lovely manner. I've since recommended him to another couple and they're very happy with him too. Oh, and I'm in mid Wales in case you're wondering where I live.

Ask around among other parents in the area. Or start a Mumsnet thread asking about KS2 maths tutors in [ares]. The school aren't really in a position to rate outside tutors as they won't have used them.

Word of mouth is the best way to find a tutor, but if you don't know anyone having tutoring yet that doesn't help!

I assume when you rang the school you spoke to the secretary. Officially they won't recommend tutors. However, you might find if you speak to one of the teachers that someone on the staff does private tuition. It's not uncommon for someone in our staff room to say "Does anyone want to tutor Jo Bloggs in Y4?". Also sometimes the governors do that sort of thing so they might be another starting place to try.

There are quite a few agencies - I've worked for this company.

I found a great maths tutor just by googling!

The site I used alowed me to email them, then I vetted the replies. (the ones who replyed in text speak were immediately eliminated! I then had a phone conversation with the tutor before deciding to go ahead, so was able to get a feel of what she was like, how helpfull she would be.

Kumon a complete waste of time and money, IME.
