My daughter is due to start school in September, but has recently just clicked with reading and now loves reading and wants to read new books all of the time. I give her a new book and after a couple of times reading it, she knows it and can just recite it, knows the new words and is asking for a new book. I want to support her, but don't want to push her. Up until now, I have let her take it at her own pace... which has been quite slow and a pace that I've been comfortable with. Now that reading seems to be clicking into place for her, she is wanting to read more and have more new books.. but I'm not sure how frequently she should have access to new books? If it were down to her, she would have a new one every day - but I can't afford to fund that and I don't want to go at too quick a pace for her. So I just wondered what other mums do (and any advice from primary teachers would be great!). I'm torn because I remember as a preschooler myself being desperate to learn and being furious at my mum for holding me back. I don't want to hold her back (which I think I am doing slightly at the moment) but at the same time I'm conscious that she needs time to read the book a good few times before she moves on. At present I let her have one new book a week (bearing in mind that she is not at school yet, so it is the only book she gets) Is that about right should she have more access to books (which she is asking for) or should I restrict her access further?
She is currently reading Songbirds phonics level 3. I have just ordered the extra 6 books, but details of any other books at a similar level that would be appropriate would be gratefully received!
thanks.
