I am looking for a phonics program (has anyone tried hooked on phonics) and maybe some thing to do with math to work on with my ds 4.5 over the school holidays. He has been learning numbers and know his numbers up to 10. I want to build up his confidence over the holidays as he is going to a very academic school from september. Also he can phonetically read quite a bit of the alphabet but lacks the motivation to try and read . I want to encourage him in a fun way.

Please don't think I am a pushy parent. I am currently in china and the schools here seem to be much more pushy than back home. I know for a fact that children going into the same year as him already have tutors etc and study with their parents every day.
I just want him to know enough that when he goes to school he does not feel left behind.

I take it you want English stuff ?

Do you have access to the internet ? There a lot of interactive stuff online that you could do with him

Try the starfall website - very good for learning the alphabet and sounds. It also has some good printable worksheets.

www.starfall.com

My 3yr old dd loves it and she can use it on her own - she particularly likes the rhymes and songs that they use. HTH

Oops just noticed throckenholt has linked to the same website as me. Also wanted to say that I am in Belgium and have used ebay to get lots of phonics books and amazon are pretty good too - they probably will deliver to china if you pay the extra.

Thanks for the website links I will have a look at them but the web here can be abit iffy. E-bay etc do deliver (really expensive) here but it takes forever and alot of the stuff get held up at custom no end (no free press here so they check everything) That is why I was looking at buying a complete program I could would with him consistantly even after he starts school.Yes I am looking for english stuff as he need to be on par with the uk for when we move back in a year of so.

I recommend Phonics International -it's a completely online, superb, synthetic phonics programme written by a UK expert, Debbie Hepplewhite.
Unit one is completely free so you can try it out.
go to www.syntheticphonics.com for the link - I think the complete programme is on special offer at the moment too

Dds nursery use Jolly Phonics, which I know is sold in most bookshops and ELC. Also try schoollink.co.uk who do the complete packs of the oxford reading tree much much cheaper than in the shops.

thanks I will look at the website though a fully web based programme may not be the best for us as the internet can be unreliable.

I know jolly phonics is very popular but I like the look of the hooked on phonics program better as it seemed more colourful and with cd roms etc for the kids to use.
