OK, Yr 5 Sats - what should they be getting? Confused again

DS1 just told us his results and like FAQ's post, I'd like to know what they mean. What should they be aiming for at this stage? I know a lot of people are against them, but as he's done them it would be nice to know a bit more info. Googling has just confused me even more.

Levels 3a and 4c are what the govt expects as an average score in Yr5... Level 4b is average for Yr 6

(The levels start at 1c (Reception-ish age)then go up to 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b, 2a etc etc)

They do SATS in year 6. So if he is in year 5 are they just practise/end of year tests? If so I wouldn't take much notice of them. But to answer your question a level 4 in year 6 is the expected level. A 5 is very good and a 3 below expected level. One year on he may go up a level or may achieve the same. Depends on the teaching.

Think the post below may be more helpful than mine. With the actual results in year 6 they don't give sub levels ie a b or c.

Thanks, he reckons he got 4b (writing - he's a lefty) 5 (Reading) 5b (maths)

That doesn't sound right though, I guess I'll wait until parents evening & reports to get the full picture. He does love school but he's a bugger at home right now

If they are correct, then well done Master Bubblerock, he is above average and doing well in school

Does he have a Level for Science?

bubblerock · 28/06/2008 11:03

I just asked him and he said they weren't tested in science and is quite insulted that I'm questioning his results lol - since when did 10 year olds act like stroppy teens?

They will be correct and he's doing very well.

FAQ · 28/06/2008 11:09

well done bubblerock ~Junior - like you I'm against them and not bothered so to speak, but still wanted to know what they actually meant. My DS1 is also doing really well and I'm very

Schools do SATs every year between Yr2 and Yr 6, they are called optional sats and are used to track child's progress. My DD YR5 did hers a couple of weeks ago, but our school doesn't give out the results,
Writing isn't handwriting, its more spelling, sentence construction etc.

It is a good level to achieve year 5 but I have to say I find the levelling for the year 5 QCA tests to be rather spurious.

If you were to look at the level 3-5 papers set for year 5 and compare them to the year 6 SATs papers (also year 3-5) the year 5 ones are much easier to achieve a level 4 and 5 particularly in maths (and particularly if you compare them with this year's year 6 maths SATs papers which were very hard!)

On our school reports we always report the test score and a teacher assessment because some of the tests do come up with higher scores which then results in parents at the end of year 6 who think their children have made no progress.

Additionally children would be expected to go up by one to two thirds of a level between year 5 and 6. SO if 3a now than 4c/4b at year 6

Ok, I'll cut him some slack then lol. FAQ - I know, I feel guilty mentioning them on here as I'm happy with how he's getting on at school etc.. and I don't want to come across as a pushy parent (I am way to lax as a parent tbh) but when they come home with these numbers it's nice to know what they mean. He said he was the highest in maths and he definitely doesn't get that from me!!

I don't think they matter much up here because we don't have grammer schools and I couldn't afford to send him to a posh school so he'll be off to the local comp next year whatever results he gets in yr 6.
