Cursive writing - comments please

Hi everyone

DS is starting school in Sept and his school teaches cursive writing.

DS's fine motor skills aren't good and I am worried that he will battle with cursive writing.

IMO, cursive writing is harder to grasp, out of date and pointless. Who acutally writes cursively nowadays?

I would love to hear other folks experience/opinion. I might be completely wrong and just dreading it because of my own experience with cursive writing.

Thanks
CADS

Lots of schools are moving over to full cursive writing from the beginning as it can help with phonics, and avoids the need to re-teach handwriting at Yr 2.

Our school teaches cursive. Tbh I think it's taken DS longer to get to grips with handwriting because of it.
When he writes he just leaves off all the loops now, which is fine with me. Also they learn their letters in cursive and all their books are in print, which leads to confusion.

Our school does joined up writing from reception, I was skeptical, too, but now I'm a big fan. It helps them write faster sooner, it isn't any harder on fine motor skills (easier, in fact, I reckon, because they don't have to pick up the pen and put it back down again in just the right place).

They just do simple letters with flicks at start, tails at end, to start, and encourage the children to join letters together later.

Many of the children evolve a kind of half print-half cursive writing style over time, which I think is fine as long as it's legible.
