No communication yet from reception school before September start, is this normal?

My daughter is starting reception in September and has been at a separate private nursery so no connection to the school. She breaks up from her nursery on the 10th of July for summer.

We have had no communication from the school yet, no letter, email, nothing. Is this normal? I have emailed the school on Monday with no response so will phone them later if still nothing. I presumed this was normal until a friend was shocked I’ve heard nothing as she’s already had info about uniform and transitions.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Honeyhonay · 24/06/2026 07:48

I don’t think it’s normal. We have already had an induction day which gave all the information on their school days, starting date, phasing schedule, uniform etc.
Those attending other schools around me have also already done this.

SparkyBlue · 24/06/2026 07:49

No that’s not normal.

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2026 07:50

Mine was in my junk folder, if you haven’t looked there yet…

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/06/2026 07:54

Thats not normal. You should certainly check - maybe go in person and see the receptionist. You need to find out if you are actually on their list. I once had an unexpected child brought in to my Reception Class on the first day of term because the mother thought it was automatic and she didn't need to apply. Something might have gone wrong somewhere and your child's name might have accidentally been dropped off the list

MadeofCheeese · 24/06/2026 07:56

About 2 weeks ago we got a welcome email, term dates, uniform info ect. We don't have an induction as we have half days in September with this school. I do know a few people who had inductions last week. Given that a few of us on your thread have received information I would chase.

Twosheep · 24/06/2026 08:01

At local schools here they often do a’stay and play’ morning for the new intake about now?

Maybe give the school a call or pop in and ask x

CheerfulMuddler · 24/06/2026 09:09

Definitely not normal. We'd had a welcome email, a stay and play and a visit to the school by this point.
Did you definitely accept the place?

Overthebow · 24/06/2026 09:11

No not normal. DDs school is having move up days this week so all new reception starters are coming in to the school to meet their new teachers and other children. Their packs were sent out a month ago.

ThatMrsM · 24/06/2026 09:22

Yes I would phone them. Didn't you even get a 'thank you for confirming your place' email when you accepted? It seems late considering there are only like 3 weeks left of school before the summer holidays.

somekindof · 24/06/2026 09:24

The email might have come from the application portal rather than the school. Eg Aplicaa in my area.

Yes I got the confirmation email and I have logged back in online to check it’s been confirmed

Okay, definitely no message anywhere and checked my junk. Tried phoning but no one to talk to me right now so I’m to phone back later 😬

Nothing on their web site? Do you know anyone else going? Should be a new parents evening I would have thought? Look at school diary on web site and newsletters. Plus any info on their admissions section. You might find what they did last year. Has anyone visited dc at nursery?

Nothing on website, no. Don’t know anyone going as we are fairly new to the area. I’ve had a good look and can’t find any info so I’ll be phoning again tomorrow

Could you post on the local Facebook page, and see if there any other new parents around? It would be good to make contact anyway?

makemineadecaf · 24/06/2026 21:10

We’ve already had 2/3 settling in events and parent info evening…

BoleynMemories13 · 24/06/2026 21:19

I have taught Reception at 3 different schools and, although each school is different, I would say it's very unusual not to have heard anything at all by now.

My current school send our allocated families an initial email in April, welcoming them and telling them that more information will follow shortly. Then they get their welcome pack posted out in May, with all the dates for stay and play sessions, transfer day and the dates for our home visits in July.

We had our information evening last week, and stay and play sessions started this week.

It might be worth asking the nursery staff if her school have made contact with them yet. Then try ringing the school. They haven't set a great first impression though with the combination of no information yet and ignoring your emails. I hope you get some answers soon 🤞🏻

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 24/06/2026 21:35

@Ginagogo No school diary in the newsletter or on the web site? That’s not very community friendly. Definitely ask at nursery though. The staff there might know what the school does every year.

SparkyBlue · Yesterday 09:40

Did you hear anything yet OP

Lots of schools don’t have their newsletters or calendar on their websites anymore because of privacy concerns. I’m a supply teacher used to look on websites before I went to a school to see what’s what but more than half of them don’t share any information anymore.

ShrinkyDinkyPetal · Yesterday 09:57

Is your nursery linked in with them at all? Ours had all the schools visit the nursery to meet their children, the nursery manager knew all the local schools well so you might have some insight there? (If close by!)

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 11:01

@savoycabbage They do here. Names of dc not included but initials are and no photos in newsletters. Poor communication is rife then! No wonder Op is struggling.
