Can anyone explain how late Reception applications are actually processed?
I'm hoping there may be some teachers, admissions staff or parents who've been through this before, because I'm completely baffled by the process.
My child was offered a Reception place at school A on National Offer Day. However, after spending more time looking into the practical realities of getting him there every day, I realised I hadn't fully considered the day to day logistics involved. As a result, I submitted an application through my local authority in early June requesting a place at a different primary School B for September.
The application is now live on the admissions system.
Since then, I've spoken directly with school B, who have confirmed they currently have Reception places available. I've also spoken to the local authority multiple times and, as recently as last week, they confirmed there is currently no Reception waiting list at school B.
Based on that information, I assumed the application would simply be assessed and a decision made.
However, after chasing the local authority again today, I received a somewhat generic possibly AI written response explaining that although the school may presently have places available, there may be additional applications for the school that need to be considered alongside my child's application. They also stated that all applications must be ranked in accordance with the school's oversubscription criteria before places can be offered.
I completely understand that if there are more applicants than places available, applications need to be ranked. What I'm struggling to understand is why an application would sit for several weeks where:
- The school says it has places.
- The local authority says there is no waiting list.
- The application is live on the system.
Is it normal for local authorities to process these applications in batches or allocation rounds rather than individually?
Has anyone worked in admissions and can explain what might be happening behind the scenes? At the moment I feel like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle!
