Primary school hearing

Hello. Has anyone here attended a primary school appeal hearing? It seems us mums that applied all have a hearing at the same time on the same date? We’re a little confused as to what this process means or what’s going to happen, thanks

They can tell you the last allocated distance and how they measure distance (absolutely nothing to do with GDPR) obviously can't tell you who the place was allocated to. You need the admissions teams to give this sort of information, contact the admissions team manager as it sounds like someone doesn't know what they're doing

Exactly I didn’t ask for names obviously I just asked for the distance of last child and nope they outright refused. It was the council admissions I had emailed too! When speaking with the school they have been very helpful but somethings they say ‘the council know more than us’ and she did also say things might of changed that they aren’t yet aware of ( seems stupid if they aren’t communicating with each other ) appeal is on 23rd, will post an update see how we get on

I say this as I won my appeal last month for reception. That unless there has been an error on the distance then your best argument to get her into the school is due to a medical issue. You said her only friend was the teacher for the first 6 months so that is a good point to start with, if you believe she is struggling with anxiety then contact your health visitor and ask for an assessment such as a SOGS. Tell them at the appeal that you have had the assessment or your are awaiting an assessment. If you believe that the school is the only viable option due to anxiety you need to emphasise this that no other school can meet her needs and that moving environment would be detrimental to her mental health and education.

Yeah maybe this is something I need to do. Thinking of it now even when she sees a particular friend who she’s known since birth she won’t speak to her and goes all shy and wants to stay with me won’t hold her hand or go off and play with her. So god knows what she’d be like actually going to new school, making me a nervous wreck too😢

Medical issues are not a basis for winning an appeal for years R to 2.

Lightuptheroom · 12/06/2026 21:37

@MammaC21 what grounds did you win your appeal on? If you're talking about medical issues it sounds like you may have won your appeal because your child wasn't placed in the correct category when places were allocated for your particular school? I'm a bit concerned as I've not come across anyone winning an infant class size appeal like this so perhaps clarify what reasons were given as just waiting for an assessment won't help the OP.

It’s @fortheloveofthemoney who won their appeal. I agree tho, winning an ICS appeal on medical grounds is very unusual; they more likely won yes bc of a mistake.

@MammaC21 pursuing a diagnosis of anxiety will not win you a place sorry. If you had an EHCP that named the school that would be different, but a child not being outgoing with lots of friends aged four is not grounds for one surely.

@clary oops sorry, mixed the names up.
