Is £25 to £30 a day normal for after-school pick-up?

This is related to the school run, so posting here since I am not sure where exactly. We are looking to arrange an after school pick up and we have quotes of 25 pounds a day and 30 pounds a day. This is just to collect and drop off at home (10 mind away). Is that the going rate? its their own car and they are DBS checked etc. We had some one earlier at 13 pounds so wondering if this is the new price!

Sorry need more details like how many miles and how long it will take! £25 for a 50me journey of over an hour is different to £25 for a 3mile journey???

Nickyknackered · 06/06/2026 19:53

Basically a taxi role? You're going to pay for the whole evening slot as they can't take on another child instead. No one is going to work for only 10 mins a day, who could live on that? It has to be worth their while.

WerewolfOfLoudon · 06/06/2026 19:58

Multiple short journeys uses more fuel, insurance has gone up too especially for hire and reward. You are also paying for them to get out and collect your child. If you aren't, then pay for taxis.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 20:00

Is this a taxi firm? If so there’s the hanging round time at school, journey time, dbs, insurance, dropping off time and handing over

how old is the child/children????

but yes I wouldn’t work do this for less than £25-30 as that’s what a taxi driver in an hour would maybe ear during that time.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 20:01

An alternative would be to reach out to another parent and offer them money to do it instead of a taxi - if they’re going anyway they might be grateful of the cash 💰

Soubriquet · 06/06/2026 20:07

Not a chance. That sounds like a fortune. Who could afford paying that?!

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/06/2026 20:10

For a childminder? This will be their flat rate for an afternoon, and is reasonable for that. It might just be a pick up and drop off but means they can’t take another child who they would have for a couple of hours so it’s essentially paying for that spot

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/06/2026 20:22

I'm a nanny and would charge £30 to do that.

I can't really work around it, I charge a minimum of 1h (my rate is £24ph) for any work but due to the inconvenience I would charge £30.

You could see if there are any childminders who do pick up at the school, they could potentially be a little cheaper (I have childminder friends who would charge £17-20 for this)

ShetlandishMum · 06/06/2026 20:23

Quite normal then ours were at primary.

hahabahbag · 06/06/2026 20:27

How long and far is the total job? 10 minutes away plus waiting about? I’m assuming they need to allow 30 minutes for the slot including arriving at the school, parking, walking. Where we live they charge £50 for an airport run and that takes 30 minutes give or take

Hotdoughnut · 06/06/2026 20:30

After school club is £14 for us for 2.5 hours. Do you not have a similar option? £30 for a 10min drive home is nuts. But it's a strange set-up and you're possibly blocking a (childminder?) space and so paying over the odds for the time you need.

Overthebow · 06/06/2026 20:33

I can see why they’d charge that as they couldn’t take in any other work in that time, but I wouldn’t pay it as after school club is £16 until 6pm which includes two snacks.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 06/06/2026 20:36

Is there a parent working at home? Could they not change lunch time to then if it would only be 10 mins each way?

DontTheSkyLookPrettyUpHere · 06/06/2026 20:41

At one point we had a childminder doing this for us and she just charged us for 1 hour of her care.

Hatty65 · 06/06/2026 20:51

They are going from their place to the school, hanging around til kids appear, 10 mins to your house, then back to their place. It's presumably going to take 30 mins minimum so I imagine a flat 1 hour fee of £25 - 30 is not unreasonable.

Yes, it seems pricey but people's time is nowadays and unfortunately if that's the rate being charged for getting the kids picked up from school it's probably a bit 'take it or leave it' for you.

Thank you all! this is helpful to calibrate!
