Hi, i want to bring in some control over what we watch on YouTube. Are there any channels any of you would reccommend for 6y old boy. I am looking for both categories - those that have some learning component and those that are mosyly meant for entertainment. Thanks.

I personally wouldn’t want my 6 year old on YouTube at all. What about sites like CBeebies Games?

Most of youtube is interest-specific, so you really need to tell us what he likes or is into?

The more "general" kids channels tend to either be absolute mindless trash, or they are the youtube channels of larger traditional TV channels (E.g. nickelodean, hotwheels, BBC, all have youtube channels with kids content), but then why watch it on there and not on the TV normally?

You'll get a lot of negative comments about youtube on here, mostly from people who still view it as a silly online platform for nonsense or even harmful videos. And all of those do exist - but it does also have absolutely amazing content as well.

For example, is your son into history? Youtube has some of the best history content, cartoons, documentaries, etc.

Is he into Lego? Lego Youtube is great - so many amazing builders who build very cool things to inspire young kids to build/engineer.

Look at Mark Rober and Crunch Labs. He's an ex NASA engineer who does brilliant engineering experiments for kids.

Why YouTube?
Just have him watch Cbeebies or CBBC.

Are you using YouTubeKids?

I teach six year olds. I would not let my own children go on you tube and I would not actively look for channels they could watch. If you want them to watch things, those things should be slowed paces as watching things on YouTube is destroying the concentration of young children.

Also, you can’t guarantee that it is appropriate. A lunchtime staff member at my school let herself be persuaded into putting some bbc programme on through YouTube and it was dubbed with swearing. I’ve also had to run across a classroom myself to switch off an advert for grand theft auto.

No
Give him toys to play with
He doesn’t need screens

I should have said that if you're moving off YT (and I would) crunch labs is also on Netflix.

YouTube is not to be trusted for kids. Ceebeebies and CBBC are much much better

I think it depends how you use youtube - I definitely wouldn't let mine have control of it themselves, but there are some channels we love watching as a family, we tend to watch one video for 20mins or so before bedtime.

Mine are 4 and 9 and we all love 'Outdoor boys' - its a family in Alaska with 3 young kids doing outdoor stuff - lots of camping, fishing, hunting, building stuff. Very wholesome and suitable for kids, unless you want to avoid them seeing things where they catch/kill/eat fish etc.
