Experiences of Rettendon, St Luke’s Park and Downham C of E primaries

Hi everyone,

I’m currently trying to narrow down primary school choices for my son and would really appreciate any honest feedback on:m
• Rettendon Primary
• St Luke’s Park Primary
• Downham C of E Primary

I’ve looked at Ofsted reports and admissions data, but I know that only tells you so much and parent experiences are often more helpful.
Thank you 🙂

These are all Essex primary schools which handle their own mid-year applications, so is this a query re a mid-year application whete you've already applied to all three and each has indicated that a place can be offered? This would be a 'choice' issue.

Or are you considering whether and in which order to name the three schools on your CAF for 2027 reception entry? In which case, whatever people's opinions and experiences of the schools, remember that it's a 'preference' issue and you also need to consider where your DC is likely to be ranked against each school's oversubscription criteria. It may well be that all three schools are undersubscribed as 'first effective preferences' - they all admitted under 'other applicants' for the current academic year - and you would get in to any of them from the other side of Chelmsford or beyond, but you can't necessarily assume that. For example, new schools built predominantly to serve a new build area initially often fill with pupils from relatively far away. I don't know if this was the case with St Luke's Park, but this, coupled with the school having no defined priority admissions area, may mean than quite local eldest in family / only DC applicants for 2027 could be squeezed out by siblings of not necessarily very local pupils from the 2023 onwards entry.

This is for my child who I will be applying for this year, starting in September 2027. I’m lucky to have a primary in Wickford as catchment as a back up but I am looking for the opinions of other parents regarding schools above. Do you have children in any of those schools? I’ve done my research re last distance offered etc and St Luke’s would definitely be an option for us going on previous years. St Luke’s, Downham and Rettendon are all under subscribed for the September 2026 start and my sons birth year was the lowest since something like 1977 - so all of that combined I’m hopeful we will have a chance at all three. Again though, just looking for opinions at the moment, so if you have any experience with these schools I’d love to hear about it.

Sorry, no personal experience of these schools (I do know where they are - we are not in that area, though not a million miles away and I do 'get out and about'Smile). Related to my volunteer rôle, I tend to be a bit 'on a mission' wrt parents making (or not making...) realistic 'choices' about applying for school places - but you have obviously already done a good bit of research here and I hope that your DC does achieve a place at the best school for you both.
