What is the issue here…. Phonics reception

Hi
so DD is learning to read and is able to blend and segment words and according to her teacher is on track however when I am practising with her I’m noticing a couple of behaviours that are distraction techniques to allow her processing time. I do question dyslexia.

so she will read the list of words that are in the story and the red word (tricky word)

she will then read her pages but sounds out every word again, even though she’s just read it. It’s like she’s not processing that it’s repeating. At times she will say a word that doesn’t even look like the word she is reading.

what would you say this is and any advice on how to support other than practise. I do know that she is a perfectionist as well so I wonder whether she’s sounding out to make sure she’s right.

DD’s attention is poor of a night so we practise in the morning too.

That's perfectly normal for her age and stage, just let her sound out each time. Eventually it will become automatic. Remember that it's only easy for you as you are a skilled reader. She is working hard to decode a bunch of abstract squiggles.

It’s very common. I think it’s a cognitive load issue, they’re trying to remember all the phonics sounds, exception words and how to blend and they can only old so much new info and skills in their head at the same time. It’s like learning to drive trying to scan the room
ahead, mirror, signal, manouver and change gear felt impossible when learning to drive but it later becomes some thing you don’t need to think about.

As others have said it’s perfectly normal at this point.

You know it’s the same word because you have years of reading experience so automatically recognise it. If you started learning a new language it would take you time to consistently recognise words in that language. It’s the same for someone just learning to read.

Yh it's normal. In fact at parents evening my child's teacher was telling me her child does exactly this and it helps to remind that they know the word already as they just read it

Please don't worry. I'm an experienced Reception and I have several children still at this stage, who I fully expect to reach the Early Learning Goal for word reading by the end of June. Obviously I can't say for sure that she won't be dyslexic, but it doesn't scream dyslexia to me. Sounding out every word, even words they've just read on another page, is a very normal developmental stage in learning to read. She'll grow in confidence and develop greater fluency with practise and experience.
