Guided reading is when a group of children, usually of similar reading ability, read the same book with a teacher or TA. The way it seems to happen at my boys' school is that the children take it in turns to read a bit out loud. The session is used to talk in more detail about the book - comprehension, vocabulary, punctuation, etc, depending on what level the children are.

We get exactly the same 'zero feedback' stuff. For DS2 last year (Y1) it just used to say 'Guided reading' without even a book title. Now in Y2 it at least gives the book's name.

I don't mind much either coz DS is a good reader, but if he wasn't I would want more feedback.

Guided reading is when the teacher reads with a small group of children in a structured way.

My Ds comes home with a book with a title like "patterns" and next to it it says GGR what does that mean?
I feel like going GGRRR cuz I don't know.

sg has it right. In our reception class the guided reading is done with a book a level up from the one the children are bringing home. The idea is that the children are given the slightly harder text in class so they can be pushed (encouraged?) by the teacher and helped with the hard words etc, and that the level they are on at home is one they are comfortable with so they don't struggle at home, iyswim? At the point they are reading the guided text fluently they are then moved on to that level for their own reading books.

We get feedback though on our children's guided reading and I wouldn't be happy with 0 feedback, because they are not giving you an idea of how your dd's reading is progressing, or whether they even have observed her reading - with 0 feedback for all you know the teacher could give her a book and then just write that she'd read it - you have no idea how much the teacher observed or what she observed.

At dd's school she's been doing Guided Reading for about six months now, to start with all we had was "guided reading" written in the reading record book, but for the last month or so we have had feedback! usually a comment about whether dd had participated, if she struggled etc, which is quite helpful... still wish she read more in class... but have given up flogging that dead horse....

dd reads Tuesday and Wednesday with parent helper ( v experienced mum) as teacher rightly spends time with those finding it harder.

Dd gets 6 books a week. 2 on Tuesday 2 on weds and I choose 2 on Fridays.
School very receptive to parents commenting and stuff. Generally very happy with them it is a small village school so very friendly and close knit.
