What is your school sun cream policy?

As the title really, what is the policy at your DC school?

Are they expected to wear it all day and not re apply? Are they allowed to re apply themselves? Appreciate most will be in a classroom but we’re at a school that have an outdoor classroom which they encourage to use.

DC in reception so first experience but not allowed to take their own to re apply due to allergies in the classroom so will apply before school though I’m nervous of the days they are in breakfast and afterschool club as that is a long time without!

So what cream will last 9 hours (7-4) and will stand up with hand washing / mouth wiping!

I find a lot of schools have policies that are not safe and are totally inadequate. All day sunscreens shouldn’t be marketed as such (basically give a false sense of security). Kids are often out playing for lunch at the hottest part of the day.

My child is often in 9-6 due to after school care. I have previously had a moan because my very fair child wasn’t allowed to reapply at lunchtime. We really need to be getting on top of this national and work towards policies like they have in Australia.

We use the boots long lasting one. If they can apply themselves they are allowed to top up. We send the boots solid stick for that.
Also as a boy with short hair he takes a wide brimmed hat or a baseball cap with flap at the back.

DD’s school allows them to take it in and they can top up themselves and she’s great at applying it. She is fair skinned and allergic to quite a few of the all day ones, so I would be kicking up a fuss otherwise. Her summer club requires them to take sunscreen and reapply and as part of the registration you are asked to sign if they don’t have suncream that it’s okay to use the club’s suncream.

“Parents should apply sun cream before school. Children can take sun cream into school to reapply themselves but the one class teacher does not have time to reapply sun cream on 30 kids, imagine how much time that would take”.

I put 8 hour sun cream on DC faces, ears and neck before school. They always have a long sleeve top on to protect their arms from the sun. If it’s a hot day I reapply at pick up. School also recommend parents supply sun hats for break time. Sun glasses are also allowed.

Ours can bring it in and reapply if they like. I always feel very nervous about the really sunny days when very fair skinned children are outside for long times - sports day on my old school with no shade was particularly bad. It seems ridiculous especially not to allow KS2 children to reapply themselves. I can see the issue with infants and don't know what the answer to that is except teach less. There simply isn't time in the day at present. If you put something extra into the day, it needs to be accepted that something has to come out.

I used to send a letter out to parents stating what our standard sun cream was and asking to return if they did NOT give permission! used to stand on the door on the morning asking parents if they had sun cream on and if not asking them to apply ours. Any that had their own completed a care plan and we helped apply it. Also hats and didn’t go out in the hottest sun for prolonged periods. I was an early years lead/deputy head so youngest children who couldn’t apply properly.

We use the Boots all day one as the school doesn't allow them to bring it in. TBH it's just nice to see some sun after such a miserable long winter!
