School system in Royston

Is there anyone who lives in Royston, Hertfordshire, that can help me make sense of the 3-tier system there? It seems to operate on a First, Middle, and Upper school system, but the Herts County Council just has a few First schools listed. What happens next when children are done at First schools? Do parents need to make another application for a school once they turn 9??

Not Royston but we have the 3 tier system here. Yes you make another application at years 4 and 8 for middle and upper schools.

Thank you for clarifying for me :)

Not in Royston but local enough to know its system. Yes children move at 9 following first school. Royston town itself is a legacy 3 tier system - there is only one all-through 9-16 school. Areas to the south of Royston retain a "true" 3 tier system with middle and upper schools. The 9-16 school in Royston doesn't have the best reputation but is improving. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info.

Not Royston, but slot a middle school area. Yes, you apply for each school at the appropriate time. Our middle schools start in Y6, so you do a primary school application in the Autumn of Y5.

DC are now Y9/Y13, and I have loved the middle school system because:
1 - when you’re getting towards the end of primary age, and a bit fed up of hanging out with 4 year olds, you go to a more grown up school.
2- you get that bit of independence a bit younger.
3- but as the steps up are more smaller , it’s not such a shock
4- it keeps tweens separate from the big, smelly teens until they are one.

Ha! Thanks for sharing the pros - makes a lot of sense. Never knew this existed in the UK so this is really interesting. I'm planning to move to Hertfordshire next year, and Royston looks more cost effective with great First Schools. If you're in the Hertfordshrie area and have any other location recommendations, I would welcome it
