EYFS Reception Class Teacher Interview

Morning!

I have been invited on an interview and would love some tips and advice if possible please 🤞🏻.

I need to deliver a 30 min lesson linked to their current topic ‘places I go’. It’s a whole class input focusing on utw. After the input, I need to model an enhancement in an area of my choice to a group of children whilst maintaining an overview of the whole class and demonstrating my understanding of high-quality adult interactions.

A good book to use would be The Train Ride by June Crebbin illustrated by Stephen Lambert. There will be lots of resources online for linked activities.
Really good book for joining in with repetitive text. You could listen to a train as the rhythmic repetitive text can mimic the sound.
Lots of environments involved countryside seaside etc. Plenty for discussion and questions.
You could have some resources linked to the journey ticket, lunchbox etc.
I’m sure you could come up with an activity. See if they have a Tuff spot that you can link in for a multisensory activity.
Good luck.

I’ve interviewed many teachers in my time - at secondary level, so not the exact same, but in case it’s helpful, this is what I’m always looking out for:

  • Are the basics there? (E.g. lesson structure, awareness of need to adapt for differing needs, basic behaviour management strategies)
  • Does the teacher have a presence that the students respond well to?
  • Are they able to reflect on what went well and where they could have improved?

Ultimately, I’m not looking for a perfect teacher; I’m looking for whether or not this is someone who can eventually flourish in our setting. I also expect them to have some idea of our school context - not necessarily an in-depth knowledge, but some awareness that there’s a high deprivation factor, for example. So if it’s not a school you already know well, have a look on their website, and maybe have a look at their most recent OFSTED report as that should contain all that kind of information.

Good luck!
