We moved to Norway at the beginning of April and he had his first day in Norwegian school on the 7th. He started in a class mix of year one and year 2. He spoke some Norwegian then, but very clumsily and with no grammatic sense. But today I had a word with his teacher. He is at the same level as the Norwegian Year One children, and is racing ahead in reading. He now reads almost as well in Norwegian as in English, getting the pronounciations right, and even has three more letters to contend with! He is ahead in maths too.

The original plan was to keep him back and do entire year 1 from this automn, due to his lacking norwegian skills, but he has come along so well that he will be moving on to year 2 together with his current Year 1 class and get his lessons with them!

He is 6 btw. They start school at 6 in Norway.

Hurra!

Very good! It's incredible isn't it how fast some children adjust.

QuintessentialShadows · 13/06/2008 19:57

Thanks Belgo, I am really proud of him. He has settled so well, and made so many new friends. He is happier in school than he has ever been before!

FrazzledFairyFay · 13/06/2008 20:53

Well done QS' DS, you should be very proud

He was so pleased when I told him what his teacher said. He was really worried about this, as he already thinks he is not getting enough school work.

My dh is currently in India, and coming back through London I am going to ask for more booklets with maths exercises for him.

I am so pleased for you all. Are they still being too noisy for your Dad or has he chilled about it?

Just think it may warm up a bit soon too! Are you getting any darkness at the moment, or are you not that north?

QuintessentialShadows · 13/06/2008 22:17

Cargirl, oh, I am up north, FAR up north, so far the sun is shining all the night now! NO darkness. At all.

I can prove it to you: live webcam

And yes they are very good about the noise now. Thankfully!

I went on "helliday" with my Dad whilst he did the Arctic Canoe Race in an cadanian open canoe , I didn't sleep much those 2 weeks, oh and I'm allergic to insect bites, I was 11, we drove their from the NE of England, Hull sea crossing all in the back of a ford transit van.

I enjoyed the trip to the Tsars wooden palace thing and errrr seeing an albino elk and eerrrrrr that was about it!

QuintessentialShadows · 13/06/2008 22:53

Well, at least it was a memorable holiday in SOME respects!
