Primary schools in the Hertfordshire area

Hi
I would be grateful for any recent information or recommendations regarding state Primary schools in the Hertfordshire area. We have recently relocated to Watford and have visited two local state schools however, neither felt like the right fit for our daughters.

We would very much appreciate hearing from others who can recommend well regarded state schools in Hertfordshire that are worth considering. Any suggestions or insights would be most welcome.

It may be worth looking at the catchment areas of the schools in your locality, as this may affect what options you have.

Are you looking for a reception place? Most of the Watford schools are oversubscribed and you'll likely need to live very near to the one you want in time for application. Check how previous places were allocated on the Hertfordshire website.

What area are you? And what types of thing are you looking for in a school?

There’s a good website in Herts you can use to understand where you can get in. We used this when we applied to state primary:

It’s very user friendly. You can also use the free council data but school guru makes it very easy to calculate your chance of admission based on the last 5 years. Also need to factor in falling birth rates which can help!

@HornetFox Thank you for your reply.

We are currently looking for places in Year 6 and Reception.

Our priorities are a strong academic foundation, high-quality pastoral care and a diverse school environment.

It won’t matter where you like, it’s where there are spaces. Speak to HCC

@muminherts Thank you for your reply, that’s extremely helpful.

I wasn’t aware of School Guru, so I’ll certainly take a look.

I appreciate you taking the time to pass this information on.

Again, it’s space that count, you can target a school but you can’t go there if there is a full class, and even a waiting list. You need to speak to county. The school may hold the list, but mid year admissions are not straightforward particularly for popular schools. The one upside is the falling birth rate, but plenty of schools have cut classes.

muminherts · 04/01/2026 07:04

For in year admissions Herts publish their list. This is updated to 4 Jan but as pp say you will need to be quick as then vacancies are taken day to day

If your Year R child has already started then Grove Academy, Woodhall, Willow seem to have spaces in both Year R and Year 6. I don’t know any of these, but looks like these are currently your choices unless you are happy to drop twice.

Is your Year R child already in Year R or starting in September?

Silverbirchleaf · 04/01/2026 08:20

So you children are already in school? In that case, you need to speak Herts CC and/or speak to the schools directly. I’m slightly surprised you haven’t done this already, prior to moving . When we relocated, I contacted all the local schools to see who had spaces, and only one did (thankfully a good school). I thought at one point I would have to send my two dc to different schools.

@HornetFox Thank you for your reply.

We are currently looking for places in Year 6 and Reception.

Our priorities are a strong academic foundation, high-quality pastoral care and a diverse school environment.

I'd focus on the year 7 high school place for the Year 6 child as the Watford system is very complicated and partially selective. About 8 or 9 schools will have 11+ testing plus distance and siblings. There are also non selective schools that take on distance. You'd need to get a late high school application in ASAP.

Primary schools it sounds like you'll be needing to look for an in year place but there is a lot of movement here so you'd probably be able to get on a local waiting list for the reception child.

If you can put a rough area I can help a bit more. There's no point me recommending a school in e.g. Croxley if you live in Garston for example as you'll have virtually no chance.

muminherts · 04/01/2026 13:30

For Year 7 the OP would presumably do a late application for Year 7 now?

“Late applications
You're much less likely to get your preferred school if you apply late.
You can't alter a late application made online. Email [email protected] if you need to alter your late application.
We don't deal with applications received after the deadline until all on time applications have been considered.
If you have exceptional reasons for applying late, include the reasons and evidence when you apply. A panel will decide whether your application will be treated as late or on time – we'll let you know.
31 October 2025 – deadline for applying on time.
2 December 2025 – last date to submit a written explanation of why your application was late, for your application to be agreed as on time.
30 January 2026 – applications received after this date will not be offered a school place until 27 April – 1 May 2026.”

HornetFox · 04/01/2026 13:52

I'd contact the admissions team about both the primary and secondary situation. Moving house should be a valid reason for the late secondary application.

The secondary system is different to most of the country and indeed county here, I have just been through it and going through it again. I've known people assume they'll get given a local school but be given ones as far away as Hemel as they are the only ones with spaces.

If you are on FB there are some useful groups such as Watford parents starting Primary / Secondary that explains things really well and can help.

Give admissions a call tomorrow OP and good luck!
