8?

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 12/11/2025 21:06

7?

It’s quite blurry, for me anyway. Can’t interpret the spelling

Lookingforwardto2025 · 12/11/2025 21:07

Is the picture a bit fuzzy for others? Apologies if it is. It was fine in my phone but seems to have uploaded fuzzily.

What difference does it make to hear random opinions of what age the child is? There is a decent range of abilities that are all normal, and they mean nothing in isolation.

6-4?

mynameiscalypso · 12/11/2025 21:11

I have a 6 year old (Year 2). He wouldn’t be able to write such a long piece of writing but his spelling and grammar is a bit better. Handwriting, about the same. On that basis, I’d say 7ish (older Year 2/younger Year 3)

Thejollypostlady · 12/11/2025 21:12

6-7

Monvelo · 12/11/2025 21:15

Tidier writing than my 8yo but worse spelling. So 7 ish. Year 1 or 2.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 12/11/2025 21:17

Thanks all, am glad the second one is a bit clearer :)

@Celestialmoods because I genuinely have no idea what writing should look like for what ages and school won't show us other childrens' work (understandably). I was almost certainly hyperlexic so comparing to my work at my DS' age is very unrealistic.

Year 1. Good writing stamina. Lacking in sentence structure, capital letters and full stops. Still spelling phonetically. Good concept of time.

partytimed · 12/11/2025 21:18

I’d say about 8

insomniac1 · 12/11/2025 21:19

@Lookingforwardto2025how old is your child?

Danioyellow · 12/11/2025 21:19

6-8

partytimed · 12/11/2025 21:20

The handwriting is very neat and clear, it’s a long piece of detailed writing. Some hard words are spelled correctly.

NO MORE WITH THE 6-7!!!🙈🙈

TeacherMcTeacherface · 12/11/2025 21:23

Teacher here. The handwriting, spelling and grammar are very typical of a Y1 child (age 5/6). However, that would be an impressively long text for that age so I’ll say it’s Y2 (age 6/7)

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 12/11/2025 21:24

Ability wise? Not yet meeting Y1 expectations (lack of capital letters to start sentences, spellings not phonetically plausible - lots of missing sounds).

Age wise - on par with teenage DD who has learning difficulties. I would assume from the mention of the taxi that this child is also at a special school so could be anything from 6 - 16.

Ticklyoctopus · 12/11/2025 21:25

7 or 8?

Lookingforwardto2025 · 12/11/2025 21:26

Thanks all :) DS is actually Year 5 and has a dyslexia assessment booked next month. The school spent some time saying that it could be disruption in his reception year due to Covid although they do now support us going for an assessment. The county won't pay for it so it is reassuring to know that it is the right decision when it costs so much.

I can assure you the average MNer has no idea either. These threads are usually filled with people insisting the grammar, spelling and handwriting is better than their 10 year old's on a piece of text that wouldn't meet Y3 expectations. You'd be better off just reading the National Curriculum expectations for each year group or the simplified versions of this that come up on many school websites. They're really quite straightforward.

I uploaded a photo of my child's writing to Chatgpt for an assessment of age. It was surprisingly helpful and gave me an overview of areas that needed more support and strategies to support.
