Help me understand my DDs P1 school report (Scotland)

I'm totally confused - she's brought home a report that has a few A's on it and a few blanks. I don't understand what this means! (I was raised in Canada - completely different system!)

I don't know if I should be pleased or worried [wobbly, beseeching smile]

Hi - it's a long time since my DS was in P1 (he's 14 now!) but the system hasn't changed. From 5 to 14 (P1 to S2) they work through levels A to E. It's different from the English system (I've no idea about Canada) as the teacher puts individual children through tests when they are ready. So if your DD has some A's on the report, it probably means that she has reached level A in those subjects. The blanks will be where she hasn't set a level test yet.

The ParentZone website has information you might find useful about this.

But since they're only xpected to reach level B by the end of P4, I think she is doing very well to have already achieved level As in some subjects.

Are you having a parent's evening before the end of term to discuss it? If not, it's worth chatting to the teacher to get an overall feel for how she's doing, but it certainly sound like she's doing well to me!

Thanks for that - we don't have another parent/teacher before the end of term. At our last meeting her teacher didn't seem to have any concerns, but it is so confusing when you just 'dinnae gitit'

I'll have a look at that website, and I'll speak to her (frankly wonderful) teacher separately.

If she has achieved Level A in sme areas by the end of P1, she is doing really well!

Hi, I teach in Scotland. Are the As for reading, writing and maths? These are the areas that are more formally assessed usually. As prettybird says if she has Level A in anything by the end of P1 she is doing very well! The way the system works is that the child will only be formally tested at a particular level when the teacher feels she is ready for it. This is different to England where they are all sit SATS at the same time, regardless of ability.

TheApprentice · 06/06/2008 20:10

Aimsmum , there are not set years when certain levels are supposed to be reached, but level Bs by the end of P3 is pretty good too!

I took it from the Parentzone site - "Most children should reach Level B by the end of P4, Level D by the end of P7 and Level E by the end of S2. Some children will progress more slowly and others more quickly."

Somewhere I've got the sheet they used to give me with the reports from DSs primary school, which said something similar. But I can remember it was all "most children are likely to reach X by Y" rather than "your child ought to reach this", so you're right it's not actually a target.

TheApprentice, the As are in reading and maths. She got As for all 3 maths bits (modules? streams?) so she can't possibly be my daughter.

So I don't have to worry that she doesn't have any 'grades' against art, PE or RE?

(Can you tell I was raised by teachers?!)

Think they only do the "levels" in "Reading", "writing" and "Mathematics" (not sure if mathmeatics has a subset), so you wouldn't expect to see anytihng against art, PE and RE (isn't it RME, ie Relgious and Moral Education, or is that just at d' multi-cultural school?)

Hating my job - looking for a new one! Did consider the Business develpment role advertised at your place - but never go around to applying

Apart from that, ds is a delight, we've got great new neighbours and I need to get a life outside of work (although while it is draining me so much it is difficult....)

Night night!

TheApprentice · 07/06/2008 09:10

Yes, it is RME (Again different to England where it is just Re. You can probably tell that I used to teach in England, gives me an interesting perspective. Scottish testing system is much better imo)

babypowder · 07/06/2008 11:59

RME. I'll get used to it!
