Yr3 child drop in attainment & school not worried

We've just had parents evening for our soon to be 8yr old dc. They have a new class teacher as in newly qualified, first teaching role albeit very experienced working in schools. My dc school reports last year from Oct right through to the end of year had them at working at expected, 1 & 2 for concentration (top end of the scale) even greater depth in reading. This week the report shows dc to have several 'working towards' inc in key subjects. I said to the teacher I'm very concerned and teacher said "why, she's working towards where she needs to be. At least she has somewhere to work towards." And dc concentration grades are 3 & 4. Our school is strict with parents evening timings so I didn't even get to talk about this more or anything else so I am going to book a meeting for after half-term. I'm just not sure is this all normal, are we right to be worried. This is our eldest so we have nothing to compare too.

The term has also started off rocky with some friendship issues where the children inc mine have all been at fault. Dc has attached themselves to a child who doesn't behave well. There's a lot of SEN needs in the class like in many schools now with lack of support resources so we're just so unsure about all this. Only thing we do know is our dc has never had reports like this before. School agree with us dc is bright, at home we see no issue with homework learning, has been reading chapter books since age 7, reads daily.

You need to find out if it’s a point in time assessment or a projected one. To get expected standard in any year group you need to tick a number of things off, many of which won’t have been taught yet due to it only being Autumn term. Therefore, unless you have an exceptional child working well above where they should be, all children will be working towards where they need to get to at the moment. However, if it’s a projected grade and that’s where they think she’ll be at the end of the year they should be offering some support.

Thank you for replying, I appreciate it. I think it's a point of time as they assess again in the new year and compare to Oct report but I will confirm. She's always been at expected from reception through to yr 2 at every report so with that in mind do you think we are right to be concerned? If she had consistency been at working towards at the beginning of each academic year I wouldn't be worried tbh.

Working towards end of year expectations at this point is fine.
I'd be more concerned about the concentration grades dropping.

I have one year 7 and one year 4 child and I find whether the children are exceeding, expected or working towards depends on the teacher and varies every year. Some years they’re exceeding on most others expected with a few working towards. I’d go on how you feel your child is doing with reading etc.
