Spelling - Year 2

Just out of curiosity, how are your schools approaching spelling?
Specifically, my DS brings home 10 words every week and we are asked to practice writing them for the following week. Then they have a spelling test and get assigned another 10 words. No idea how many words there will be in the next few years!
It's quite a task to be honest - we don't have much time in the evening to do it, on top of practicing match and reading. So far we manage and DS is brilliant, but I am wondering if this is the norm for spelling?

That's what my kids' school does from year 1 onwards (I think they only have 5-6 words initially and it's definitely 10 by year 2).

Our school gives 10 per week from year 1 to year 6. They don't run weekly tests, but apparently incorporate them in the work for the week. But we don't get anything else apart from reading and TT Rockstars

Our school does 8 words in KS1 and 16 words in KS2. Words are given weekly to practice at home and tested the following week.

We struggled to fit it in, but my new system is to have an A4 "homework" book and write the spellings in. She then sits and copies them out over and over on days 1&2. Days 3&4 look, cover write check. Then days 5, 6 & 7 I read them out and she has a go. Those final 3 days are the only days I help and even then it's usually while im cooking. I have a photo of the spellings in my phone and when I remember I ask her randomly on the way to/from school. Her spellings have much improved since doing this.

Ours do a test on a Monday morning to see how many they already know. Then are retested on the Friday. If you get all 10 right on a Monday then you get a list to learn general words from. Homework is based on the spellings - word searches, writing sentences etc. so they understand the meaning, context of using the word in different tenses etc.
Takes approx 2 minutes.

Yes normal

New words every week. We practise on the school run and over tea.

DS school does spelling from Year 3. We get 8 words a week. Currently doing homophone words so not only do we have to do spelling but meaning and use as well.

I try to mix and match homework each night between maths, spelling and reading. So we don't do all every night of the week but aim to do each three times a week. Then try to adhoc them into other parts of our day - we did spellings on the drive to somewhere over the weekend the other week and maths on another drive to school the other day. We have no screen time in the week so DS has naturally started to read more as well. Its been a steady build up to where we are

I think my primary school has been pretty lax with spelling. The teachers very rarely correct the children’s written work (to avoid stifling their creativity). My y2 has never had any spellings home. I realised through y4 that my eldest couldn’t spell at all and I started an intervention programme.

From y2 she had spelling homework via an app and it went in one ear and out the other. She has since moved to a private school where there are weekly tests and (more importantly) all of her written work is marked and corrected. It will always be a struggle for her but the traditional ways that some will say have been discredited have done more for her than buggering about on an app. Once my current y2 starts getting app homework, I’m doing it the traditional way with her and ignoring the app. I think the muscle memory of writing is really important.

I do think spelling counts for much in junior state schools these days sadly. You can be achieving GD in writing and still be fairly crap at spelling. I personally think it should start to matter from year two when the reading/phonics should be fairly solid….

Won't be long till practise and practice pop up as homophones. Just so you know, practise is the verb as in I'm going to practise my spellings. I'm practising sitting still. Practice is a noun. We have hockey practice after school.

Our school also quite lax with spelling. They’ve spent the first half term of Y2 revising “spelling rules” they covered end of Y1 and then after half term they’ll start learning “spellings” but they don’t send anything home apparently. DC’s spelling is shocking but he does seem to remember ones he “learns” so we may need a home system.

Our school get this wrong in the spelling sheet itself (!)

Tbh I am generally good at spelling and always have to think about that one
