Sons sats results. Moving foward

Not sure if anyone can advise me my son failed his maths in sats but was in top set in primary and has always been bright. Hes in year 7 now and I feel like its a bit unfair to make him bottom set at maths yet all his school life he was top set. He comes home moaning how easy it is. Should I call the school and speak to them or should I let them figure it out? He suffers with anxiety severely so his sats he suffered due to it.

Secondary will be doing their own assessments. If he is still in the bottom set in a couple of months I would ask about moving him. However it depends on there being spaces in other sets as well

Usually once Year 7 is more settled schools test again and re-jiggle sets.
If they believe he can be in a higher set they will move him.

Firstly I didn't realise it was possible to 'fail' SATS and secondly it would be bizarre if the school wasn't picking up on it if he's in the wrong set.

You can't fail sats.

As far as secondary goes they will re set him if necessary as long as he shows what he can do in the lessons. If he moans he is bored but acts up and doesn't show what he can do they won't. I would wait until half term at least and tell DS to work hard (even if he thinks it is easy) and behave well until then and see what happens.

I think encourage your child to be ask for extension work etc, rather than just sitting there bored.

It doesn't matter what set he was in before. If there is a lower average at your previous school, it's just lower.
I'd be surprised if an assessment for secondary setting was purely based on SATS. What were his standardised scores across the whole of KS2? They measure against national standards of 100,000 kids so will be more accurate. And school will do their own.

My kids was put in set 4 at secondary despite good sats as they hadnt been passed on. It took until mid oct to fix it. However worth noting now y9 theyve reset them and mixed sets 2/3 so in the end in our case it hasnt mattered that much.
I would say for our school the biggest difference is set 1 as they are doing the hardest work.
In your situation i would email school just to say the sats are low due to anxiety if you know he was doing better on practise papers. Our school the maths steps up a lot very quickly so y6 work is comparatively very easy.
At least 2 kids who did very well at sats in this school are now in sets 3 or below as the primary were cramming. Secondary is more about picking up new work quickly.
