How do I choose a school

hello.
please can I have your advice on choosing a primary school. I love in london and finding this so overwhelming. I live a ten min walk from the nearest one (which would be my second choice). I like a school that’s on my way to work but out of my catchment area.
im being told to go with what’s nearest for ease and also that birth rates are low so could get into the one that’s out the catchment area. Is this true? What are other peoples experience please?
thank you

It’s a preference not a choice I’m afraid.

You need to get the info from the council as to how many applications they had per place last year. It won't tell you for sure if they will be oversubscribed in your application year, but it's a helpful guide. If they are, and you are out of catchment, then you basically won't get in so will need to either move or accept your catchment school.

In London there are usually not fixed catchments but they allocate on distance (generally) so the nearest 30/60/90 kids get in (depending on how many forms there are per year). Siblings, looked after kids and kids with a particular named school on an EHRP get priority so normally about half the places are left by the time you get to the distance criterion. So there's a certain amount of luck involved and it's true some London schools are under subscribed or have larger catchments in recent years but it's not generally dramatic for the popular schools. You can get an idea of how close you have to live to the school by looking at the relevant council's website but some are more useful,/easier to navigate than others. Google <borough name> and "cut off distances" and you'll see.

You get six choices though and as long as you have a fail-safe option on your list you can put more aspirational ones ahead of it without jeopardising your chances of getting into the fallback school

Ensure your nearest 2 are down on the list somewhere as “insurance”.

Go to the open evenings and get a feel for the schools. See if you can also visit on a normal day. Then select your preferences, ensuring that you put in one you’re sure to get.

Best way is to tour at least 3 schools and talk to the head. Then you will be able to compare, and see which feels nicest for your child. Close to home is good often because your child will be near their friends, and you feel more a part of the community.
