Sat mats scaled score of 117, would that put you in the top 1%?

Maths not mats !

Yes, unless that's only in reading and maths is much lower (or vice versa). Maximum score is 120.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 11/07/2025 16:31

I think it depends. High grades in gps aren't very unusual, I think one year 15% of kids got 120 in that paper.

AmIRightHere · 11/07/2025 16:32

The scaled score for maths is 117

grammar punctuation and spelling scaled score 113

I can clearly see over 100 is a pass
over 110 is greater depth

so Im trying to work out what the maths results actually means

is they in like the top 1percent of the country or top3 percent ?
im trying to explain to my child just how well they have done but im trying to put it in context

Oh, maths. Yes. I think so, op.

AmIRightHere · 11/07/2025 16:33

sorry what is gps ?

Grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Candleabra · 11/07/2025 16:35

Why does your child need to know if they’re in the top 1% of the country’s results? They’re just one set of exams. You know they’ve done well, of course 117 is very good if the maximum is 120 - just say that.

Did they try hard ? If so you tell them well done. They don’t need to know individual results.
What would you have done if they had worked hard and scored 95?

defrazzled · 11/07/2025 16:38

117 is the top 5-8% looking at Fischer Family trust. 120 is top 1%.
Well done to whoever did so well!

defrazzled · 11/07/2025 16:40

I will add both my DC got full marks on all their sats papers (this was 15 years ago so not relevant to todays test scores at all) and I didn't tell either of them the results. Noe their 11plus rankings. It is not helpful at all.
Well done for your hard work is all they need to hear.

modgepodge · 11/07/2025 16:40

Probably not too 1% no. I worked in an average junior school with 60 per year group and every year we’d have a couple at that sort of score or higher. Certainly top 10%, maybe top 5%? Either way it’s a really excellent score.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 11/07/2025 16:41

The thing is though, is that kids who do well in one will often do well in another. So it isn't like you can regard it as three independent occurrences. My ds got 120 (GPS), 118 (maths) Reading (117), I don't know what that means in terms of how he performed on aggregate but I assume that it's not 1% - certainly haven't got him trained to tidy his room yet 🙄

TeenToTwenties · 11/07/2025 16:41

Just say they have done 'very well'.
Top 10% or 5% or 3% or 1%, it really doesn't matter.

Tiswa · 11/07/2025 16:44

I would say 5-8% as well - 5% go to grammar school and it seems to be a grammar school type school

Thanks very much, just trying to find that info for context
did try to google but was falling down a wormhole
thank you

If they're that good at maths they can work it out themselves if they need to know exactly where they fall in terms of the population.

How could they do that?! They got a score of 117/120. How on earth can they work out what % they’re in without knowing every other child’s score in the country?

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 16:47

Did you get the scores from school @AmIRightHere?

We got our results yesterday but no score. DD get exceeding in maths, english and spag

AmIRightHere · 11/07/2025 16:47

Thanks all, thanks for the info

i wouldn’t say worked hard for the sats
didn’t want to so any extra work for it, like a lot of the kids did, and I knew this kids should be able to do ok without doing extra
so I just said that’s fine if you don’t want to
just do your best

but I would say this child generally works hard is school just as a matter of course type thing

about to head to a secondary school soon though that a bit on the rough side
do fingers crossed next part of the journey goes ok

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 16:49

@AmIRightHere are they doing CAT tests at secondary? I think the SATs are good practice for testing tbh.

Well they'd need to do some research wouldn't they? As the poster above did with The Fischer Trust. I would have thought that was obvious!

Wow mine were desperate to know- would have been odd to refuse to tell them. We are Kent so everyone at school were busy telling each other their scores...

Ebenezerscrogge · 11/07/2025 16:51

I can guarantee you will have forgotten what she got in ten years time . She did very well . If you are in a grammar area line up a tutor for year 5 . if she works hard praise that , the older they get the more kids they meet that are high flyers and the more important that work ethic will become
