Uniform for girls who live in leggings

My nearly 4yo starts school in Sept. She is quite fussy about clothes, only really wearing leggings or cycling shorts and a T-shirt.

For those with less ‘girly’ girls what did you go for with uniform. I’ve not no chance in getting her in a dress/skirt/pinafore now. Jersey trousers should be OK but what if it is still warm in Sept?

Did you find that they changed their view on uniform over the first term? Don’t want to buy loads of other girls in her class wearing dresses etc changes her mind….

She's 4. Stop adding to the drama. You are part of the problem. You need to deal with any problems by parenting.

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 20/06/2025 08:34

Well she’s 4 so I would tell her it’s the uniform and what she has to wear…

2chocolateoranges · 20/06/2025 08:38

She’s 4 , if I’d be telling her that her clothes are for after school and the weekend but to go to school she needs to wear uniform whether it be trousers, skirt or a dress.

stichguru · 20/06/2025 08:40

Look at the shorts the school allow. Explain to her that these are the shorts she needs to wear. Buy her some and let her get used to them.

Ddakji · 20/06/2025 08:41

You chose a school with uniform. That means your DD doesn’t get to choose. Buy her a dress, hand it to her, tell her to put it on.

She won’t need to wear a dress - she could wear shorts or trousers.

taptaroundtheworld · 20/06/2025 08:43

What about soft shorts? Cotton ones or jersey ones.
Clever girl, dresses are so impractical!
Regular school uniform trousers/shorts are like sandpaper, but there are cotton and jersey ones around.

OrangeAndPistachio · 20/06/2025 08:43

I agree with @stichguru just get her some appropriate shorts. Unless there are sensory needs at play she'll get used to them.

Bitzee · 20/06/2025 08:46

I’d just get her a pinafore and tell her that’s the uniform. It’s not like they have an uncomfy waistband and she could still wear the cycling shorts underneath in summer if she prefers. School uniform shorts- it’s quite unlikely any of the other girls will be wearing them and they’re usually stiff horrible fabric so the pinafore would definitely be the comfier option.

Whatever. There is uniform, they follow it, the end.

Bitzee · 20/06/2025 08:49

Also my now 8YO has never willing worn a dress or skirt outside of school but there’s no objection to the school skirt (formally a pinafore when she was younger) or the summer dress. Unless it’s a sensory issue most kids are happy just to conform.

My DS is a trackies and tshirt sort of person but he has been fine in school uniform since starting school. I get a bit of kick back mainly with shoes every now and again as 'so and so wears trainers'. But I remind him that isn't the school uniform policy and unless the headteachers says otherwise he has to wear the uniform.

Our school has a no shorts for girls policy (it has to be skirts with cycle short underneath or skorts). Trousers are allowed though. As long as they look smart the school doesn't mind what type.

okydokethen · 20/06/2025 08:52

Cycling shorts can go under her dress

EllieQ · 20/06/2025 08:53

My DD is also particular about her clothes, but she accepted wearing uniform skirts or school dresses with leggings underneath - they kept her legs warm in the winter but were easier to put on than tights. That might be a good compromise.

ScrewedByFunding · 20/06/2025 08:54

Good lord. No wonder there are so many discipline problems in school.

purpleme12 · 20/06/2025 09:02

I love how they make so many different options now for slightly different style dresses/skirts/shorts to wear

Why bother with uniform then? There’s zero benefit in having it anyway. I read these threads and thank God DD went to a non-uniform primary.

DrCoconut · 20/06/2025 09:07

Lots of girls wear black leggings at our primary school. It depends on how strict they are on uniform.

How come - I assume boys are allowed to wear shorts?

I don't know what you mean
My child does wear uniform.

oneplustwoplustwoplusone · 20/06/2025 09:09

Goodness of course she’ll be wearing clothes that are part of the uniform and thankfully we live in a world where there are loads of options for her. Some reactions here are a bit OTT.

I was just wondering others experiences and if their dress refusers changed their minds once they started school!

DT’s went to a non uniform school from ages 4-18. So much more straightforward, practical and cheaper!
