Glasgow Southside Primary Schools

My son is due to start primary school in 2026, and I'm feeling very indecisive about what primary school to send him to. We live in Cathcart and our catchment schools are Merrylee (non-denominational), St Fillan's (RC) and Glendale (Gaelic). We live right next to St Fillan's so that would be the most convenient. We aren't RC (or any religion), but I know lots of people who aren't RC send their children there. I understand from other parents (and google) that both St Fillan's and Merrylee are "good schools" but my concern is about how large they are - almost 400 students. My son is quite a nervous, reserved boy and I'm worried about him being "lost" in such a huge school. I would also consider Glendale but it's quite far away and I don't know anyone who sends their child to a Gaelic school so haven't heard anything about how well children are doing who attend there. Does anyone have any experience with these three schools?

Another option I'm considering is sending him to either Glasgow Academy (Newlands) or Hutcheson's Prep School. I've visited both, and my preference would be Glasgow Academy. We could afford the fees (just!) but it would mean that we couldn't afford big holidays, eating out etc. so I'm wondering whether it is worth it. Any views on people's experiences with these schools (and whether the cost is worth it) would also be appreciated.

The final option I've considered is putting a placing request into e.g. Langside, Mount Florida, Battlefield PSs. I've not looked into the pros and cons of each of these schools but I understand that both Langside and Battlefield are very large schools too. Thanks in advance for your opinions/advice/experiences!

You’d be better off posting this on the Scotsnet board

I am not in Glasgow but just a note that my daughter is super shy and reserved (and is autistic and has selective mutism) and she actively thrived at a large primary school. More kids meant more opportunities to find ‘her people’ and she’s still friends now with the children she found years ago in primary school (s1 now). She really, really benefitted from a quick journey to school and being walking distance from all her friends as well. So I’d take a careful look at the nearest schools before ruling them out based on size.
