Logistics of moving to Amersham with 2 Primary-aged DC

Hello all,

I’m here hoping for some insight and advice.

My DH and I want to move to Amersham from London for a better lifestyle for our family - more space, more greenery, better schools and so on. We have two DC - one is currently in year 1 and the other is due to start Reception in Sept 2026 (by which point our eldest will be entering year 3).

I am driving myself half-mad trying to work out how on earth we move without ending up with two children at schools on the opposite sides of town. I don’t want to go through the upheaval of a move to then spend every morning and afternoon stuck in traffic and having to put one or the other child in breakfast/ afterschool club to manage the logistics IYKWIM.

We have the option of selling up and renting in Amersham to make it quick, or leaving it a few years to buy and sell at the same time.

Is there anything I’m missing? Are we bonkers trying to move two school-aged children? Or am I overthinking it?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Amersham is lovely! What schools are you thinking of?

Purely based on location because we'd need to live within reach of the station: Chesham Boi, Chestnut Lane, Chalfont Valley and St. George's.

We're not under any illusions that we'd get our pick but we're also happy that schools are good in Amersham and therefore we're prioritising having our children at the same school or near to one another but we have no idea how likely that would be with in-year transfers.

You are overthinking it. If you can move before January the application for dc2 is straightforward and can be listed according to wherever dc1 is placed. Amersham is not that vast an area.

Thank you for the sense check!

I have DC at St. George's and it's a great school. Nothing to compare to but we've been very happy with it and so are DC. I don't think it's full as there are often in year transfers of people moving from London, so you should be fine to get a place and then can apply this year for Reception next year. Good luck! We made the move and no regrets at all, we love it here :-)

Thank you for the feedback! How did you find making new local friends? I'd love to build a circle of local buddies.

I'm guessing there's loads of ex-Londoners craving more breathing space 🙂

Hi! I am also doing the move and wondering if you could let me know too? I have the same questions!

Hello!

Just returning to this thread. Keen to hear how you are getting on with St Georges.

Also to clarify -do children move from St Georges up to Woodside ? How is that?

Is the busy road outside St Georges an issue at drop off?

Thanks so much!
