Careers Day dress-up ideas

Does anyone have any ideas for a "careers day" dress-up outfit for my Reception child? She doesn't really understand the concept of "what job do you want to do when you're older" but I'd still like her to take part in the day.
Anyone got any easy ideas?

How about a dog walker. Regular clothes, stuffed toy dog and a lanyard that say dog walker.

You can generally talk about what grown ups do for jobs and give some obvious examples she will recognise such as health care (do you have a doctor play kit?), police, fire service? Anything in the dressing up box that you can take inspiration from? Ballerina?

What do you do? Could she aspire to that, especially if it has an easily recognisable uniform?

MiddleAgedDread · 31/03/2025 11:58

an adult sized white shirt could be a lab / medical coat and then a soft toy for a vet, something from a Dr's playset, a science book, or splatter one with paint or ink for an artist
an apron and a whisk for a chef or baker
outdoor clothes and a pair of binoculars or rucksack for something like a coutryside ranger / animal conservation
a hiz vest and hard hat can cover a lot of options - builder, electrician, engineer

What jobs do people in the family do?
Dress her as that.

If you have dressing up stuff, use that. Don't fret too much she's 5 and won't particularly care

Doctors coat , nurse, police etc if you have that stuff already

Apron - chef

Paint apron - artist

Polo shirt and shorts with a satchel - postie

Teacher or any office job would be own clothes with a lanyard. DD's had a hand written card stating 'Marine Biologist '!!

I’d use something that I already had at home and suspect that many others will do the same and turn up in football shirts and princess dresses.

Teacher would be easy- smartly dressed with a handbag or something

God, how extremely painful, and another way (along with making sixth formers wear “business attire”) of telling kids that real jobs don’t involve wearing normal, everyday clothes.

I wear a top, jeans and trainers and have done for decades. So that’s how I’d dress her.

Isn't the whole point to open up the kids' perspective a little?

Also, a bit disingenuous to pretend there aren't vast swathes of people who do go at least a notch smarter for work

ginnitonic · 31/03/2025 13:28

At that age my only ambition was to be a fairy.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/03/2025 13:36

Have you got a little hi vis vest and a hard hat? Add a pair of wellies, and you're anything you want on a construction site.

wizzywig · 31/03/2025 13:38

A bag of beans for an accountant? Plunger for a plumber.

Peachykween · 31/03/2025 17:52

Thanks everyone! Some good ideas. And yes - all she wants to be is a fairy or a princess 😂 I don't blame her at all.

Ah come on ... The child is 5. Not 15.
