So, who can come and explain Yr2 SATS to me?

DD has done them, this much I know. But I have lots of questions...

Will we get results?
If so when?
Will I understand the results when I get them?
Does this affect which class/streaming in KS2 (am pretty sure it must otherwise what's the point)

Thankyou.

Will get results as part of annual report in july, they will come as 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b, 2a, 3c, 3b, 3a with 1c as lowest and 3a as highest child can get. Expected is 2b at end of year 2.

Normally makes little difference to what happens next but year 3 should use results along with teachers assessment to make there own individual targets/objectives/plans for each child within the class.

Long term the school should compare year 2 and year 6 results and a child should progress 2 full levels on average ie 2b to 4b over the four years. Gives an indication if the school is teaching properly at key stage 2

leosdad, a comprehensive answer, thankyou very much

OK. In year 2 they do tests in English (reading agd writing) and Maths. The get a grade - anything from 1c to 3. 2b is averageish for this age. Schools differ in how they give you the results - parent's evening, letter home, annual report. I think the reuslts usually come out in early July, but I could be wrong.

If your school streams or sets in year 3, then the SATS results will influence that decision, but the main purpose of the SATS is to enable the school to prove that it's doing its job properly. Whether it does this or not is a matter for debate!
Year 2 SATS results are also used for target setting, and to predict Year 6 results - theroetically enabling the school to monitor individual pupil's progress over the years.Does this make sense? Say if it doesn't and I'll try again.

By the way, I thought that the tests weren't done this this week - could it have been prectice papers your dd has done?

titchy · 13/05/2008 10:07

Tests were/are being done last week, this week and next week. Teacher can decide exactly when to do them - ours picks a day when all the dcs are in and seem to be co-operating reasonably well!

seeker · 13/05/2008 10:17

Leosdad - are you sure that the 3 is differentiated? I thought it was just 1 and 2 that is - and a 3 is just a 3. Like a 5 in year 6. I could very well be wrong.....but I'm sure that what we were told.

Oh, and I also think that the 3 is an additional paper, and children are only given it if the teacher is pretty sure they are going to get the level. Most children are only given papers that go up to 2A.

I threw my dd1s sats results away unopened

I hate them.

seeker · 13/05/2008 10:21

Edid - I am SOOOOOO impressed. I hate them too - but there is NO WAY I will be able to resist finding out what ds gets!

Enid · 13/05/2008 10:24

yes I was tempted
but determined just to NOT GO THERE

Mercy · 13/05/2008 11:15

Dd told me that she did a 'special test' last week. I thought it may have been SATS but apparently not all the children did the test.

Can anyone shed light on the 3 score that leosdad mentions? (and what does level 3 reading mean?)

Enid · 13/05/2008 11:16

3 is good
1 is crap
2 is average

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:19

that's unfair Enid

level 2B is what is termed average attainment for this year

level 2C is less than should be expected

level 2A is better than expected

level 3 is the standard most children acheive at end of year 4 (but this won't be a, b, c classified at this stage) .. in order to get a level 3 they will be given a different paper to sit

level 1 is year 1 attainment

year 2 SATS is mainly teacher assessment but the tests are to back up in writing what the teacher assessment is

yes you should be told what they get

Mercy · 13/05/2008 11:19

Thanks Enid.

Enid · 13/05/2008 11:21

SATS are unfair twig, not my (admittedly brief) explanatino

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:21

this is not a reflection on your child's intelligence but on how well the school is teaching them

the figure people look at is how well schools have improved the children's grades from year 2 to year 6

but it's all bollocks .. SATS ARE CRAP and if I could keep DS off I would have ... I wish I had Enid's strength of character, I'm already feeling competitive about it

Enid · 13/05/2008 11:22

a decent school should be able to 'grade' your child without an exam to do it

it is all bollocks

Mercy · 13/05/2008 11:22

And thank you Twiglett!

What are they tested on? The three R's?

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:23

please sign the scrap SATS petition on the govt. website

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:23

numeracy
reading (comprehension)
writing

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:24

science

MehgaLegs · 13/05/2008 11:25

DS1 moved up to KS2 in Sept having attained Level 3 in his SATS in Yr2. Our bubble soon burst though at the first Yr3 parents Eve when his current teacher told us that there was no way he was level 3 for numeracy and he'd only just scraped through in literacy.

Made me realise they are crap. DS2 has just done his. I am interested to see how he scores, not in comparison to anyone else but mainly because I want to see if they confirm our thoughts about his weaknesess in literacy and strenghths in maths.

TheFallenMadonna · 13/05/2008 11:26

I assume DS has just done them. He certainly doesn't have an inkling, and neither do I. Which is probably the way it should be for a 6 year old.

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 11:27

DS is doing them this week

I am cross

Blu · 13/05/2008 11:28

I think DS is doing them this week sonce he has informed me that 'every morning this week, before we do our work, * teacher comes in and gives us each two biscuits. Then we are allowed to sprinkle 'brain powder' on them and eat them'.

DS's result will be hopeless: "the work we have to do is use-er-less. We had to read a poem and then it said find two words that rhyme with each other. There wasn't even one word that ryhmed with 'each other'. How can I answer a question like THAT?'

SixSpotBurnet · 13/05/2008 11:28

Enid, really admire your principles!

We don't get the written results of the DSs' SATS but I couldn't resist asking at Parents' Evening what DS1 had got and I very much doubt it will be any different this time around as DS2 is doing them.

At least I'll never be tempted to ask about DS3's .
